Variability in labor pain has been associated with demographic, clinical, and psychological factors. Polymorphisms of the β2-adrenergic receptor gene (ADRB2) influence sensitivity to experimental pain in humans and are a risk factor for chronic pain. The authors hypothesized that polymorphisms in ADRB2 may influence labor pain. ⋯ ADRB2 genotype correlates with labor pain but explained less than 1% of the intersubject variance in the model.

STudy of Active Duty Military for Pulmonary Disease Related to Environmental Deployment Exposures (STAMPEDE).
Because of increased levels of airborne particulate matter in Southwest Asia, deployed military personnel are at risk for developing acute and chronic lung diseases. Increased respiratory symptoms are reported, but limited data exist on reported lung diseases. ⋯ Evaluation of new respiratory symptoms in military personnel after service in Southwest Asia should focus on airway hyperreactivity from exposures to higher levels of ambient particulate matter. These patients may be difficult to diagnose and require close follow-up.

Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is a therapeutic technique used to support critically ill patients with acute renal failure in intensive care units. CRRT is preferred over hemodialysis for patients who cannot tolerate the rapid fluid and electrolyte shifts associated with hemodialysis because of their tenuous hemodynamic state. ⋯ This case study chronicles the successful mobilization of a patient undergoing CRRT. This experience suggests that CRRT patients who are appropriate candidates may be mobilized safely and therefore should not automatically be excluded from mobilization therapies.

Spinal Cord Stimulation Reduces Mechanical Hyperalgesia and Restores Physical Activity Levels in Animals with Noninflammatory Muscle Pain in a Frequency-Dependent Manner.
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an effective treatment for neuropathic pain, but its effect on chronic muscle pain is unclear. We designed this study to test the effect of SCS in an animal model of noninflammatory muscle pain. ⋯ The current study shows that higher frequencies of SCS (60 and 100 Hz) significantly reduce mechanical hyperalgesia of the paw and muscle in an animal model of noninflammatory muscle pain, and 60 Hz SCS restores physical activity levels of animals, not 4 Hz.
