Review Meta Analysis
Erythropoiesis-stimulating Agents in Critically Ill Trauma Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
To perform a meta-analysis of all relevant randomized controlled trials assessing the effect of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) in critically ill trauma patients. ⋯ The administration of ESAs to critically ill trauma patients is associated with a significant improvement in mortality without an increase in the rate of lower limb proximal deep venous thrombosis. Given the worldwide public health significance of these findings research to validate or refute them is required.

Review Meta AnalysisThe Efficacy of Noble Gases in the Attenuation of Ischemia Reperfusion Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses.
Noble gases have been attributed to organ protective effects in ischemia reperfusion injury in a variety of medical conditions, including cerebral and cardiac ischemia, acute kidney injury, and transplantation. The aim of this study was to appraise the available evidence by systematically reviewing the literature and performing meta-analyses. ⋯ Helium and xenon show organ protective effects mostly in small animal ischemia reperfusion injury models. Additional information on timing, dosing, and comparative efficacy of the different noble gases, as well as confirmation in large animal models, is needed before designing clinical trials.

The clinical benefits of intraoperative low tidal volume (LTV) mechanical ventilation with concomittent positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) and intermittent recruitment maneuvers-termed "protective lung ventilation" (PLV)-have not been investigated systematically in otherwise healthy patients undergoing general anesthesia. ⋯ Intraoperative LTV ventilation in conjunction with PEEP and intermittent recruitment maneuvers is associated with significantly improved clinical pulmonary outcomes and reduction in length of hospital stay in otherwise healthy patients undergoing general surgery. Providers should consider application of all the 3 elements for a comprehensive protective ventilation strategy.

Review Meta AnalysisAssociation of the APOE-ε4 allele with outcome of traumatic brain injury in children and youth: a meta-analysis and meta-regression.
To disentangle the temporal relationship between the APOE-ε4 allele and outcomes of paediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). ⋯ This meta-analysis provides cumulative evidence that the APOE-ε4 allele is important to the prognosis of paediatric TBI, but may have a different effect compared with adult TBI; moreover, this effect may be time dependent.
