To assess the impact of preoperative infection with the contemporary strain of severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on postoperative mortality, respiratory morbidity and extrapulmonary complications after elective, noncardiac surgery. ⋯ Preoperative COVID-19 or timing of surgery relative to diagnosis did not confer any added risk of 30-day postoperative mortality, PPCs, MINS or AKI. However, recent COVID-19 increased the risk of POD. Perioperative brain health should be considered during preoperative risk assessment for COVID-19 survivors.

Association between muscular tissue desaturation and acute kidney injury in older patients undergoing major abdominal surgery: a prospective cohort study.
Present study was designed to investigate the association between muscular tissue desaturation and acute kidney injury (AKI) in older patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. ⋯ Muscular desaturation was associated with postoperative AKI in older patients undergoing major abdominal surgery which may serve as a predictor of AKI.

Total knee arthroplasty in schizophrenia patients: early complications and cost in a propensity-matched national database study.
Studies investigating the link between mental health disorders and complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have found worse outcomes in individuals with such disorders. Therefore, risk factors and outcomes following TKA in patients with schizophrenia should be better understood. This study aims to investigate cost and duration of hospital stay, inpatient complications, and mortality associated with TKA in patients with schizophrenia. ⋯ Schizophrenia patients had a significantly longer hospital stay and increased charges acquired during their stay compared to the control group following TKA. Acute renal failure, blood loss anemia, and pneumonia were medical complications with an increased risk following TKA in patients with schizophrenia in a matched analysis. Increased care during the perioperative period following TKA in individuals with schizophrenia is thus warranted.

Observational StudyPostoperative Hypotension After Cardiac Surgery Is Associated With Acute Kidney Injury.
To describe the incidence of postoperative hypotension in patients undergoing cardiac surgery during the first 12 hours in the intensive care unit (ICU) and any relationship between hypotension and the development of acute kidney injury (AKI). ⋯ This study demonstrated that hypotension in the first 12 hours following cardiac surgery is common and prolonged hypotensive events are associated with developing AKI. This emphasizes the importance of treating hypotension aggressively and highlights a target for further research and intervention.

Clinical outcomes of total joint arthroplasty in patients with bowel ostomies.
The influence of prior colostomy or ileostomy on patients undergoing joint arthroplasty remains poorly understood. Our study aimed to assess whether patients with an ostomy undergoing hip and knee arthroplasties have worse postoperative outcomes and increased rates of revisions. ⋯ Patients undergoing hip arthroplasties with an open stoma are at an increased risk of hospital encounters and revisions, whereas TKA patients with stomas are not at increased risk of complications. These findings emphasize the importance of recognizing and addressing the unique challenges associated with this patient population.
