ReviewPrognostic Impact of Anemia and Blood Transfusions on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Vascular Surgery: A Scoping Review.
Prior studies suggest an association of anemia and blood transfusion with increased morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. However, the impact of perioperative anemia and blood transfusion on clinical outcomes in patients undergoing major vascular surgery has been poorly defined yet. The primary objectives of this scoping review were to determine the extent of the evidence base that links anemia and blood transfusions to mortality and cardiovascular outcomes in patients undergoing major vascular surgery, and identify recurring themes or gaps in the literature to guide future research. ⋯ The weight of the evidence suggests that anemia carries a substantial burden of cardiovascular complications, mortality, and multiorgan complications, resulting in increased health care costs. Peripheral and endovascular aortic surgery are affected deeply by the impact of anemia. Anemia itself stands out as a crucial predictor for requiring transfusions. In turn, the effect of transfusion of blood products is associated with worse outcomes and complications.

Peri-operative allogeneic red blood cell transfusion is hypothesised to increase the risk of cancer recurrence following cancer surgery. However, previous data supporting this association are limited by residual confounding. We conducted an umbrella review (i.e. a systematic review of systematic reviews) to synthesise and evaluate the evidence between red blood cell transfusion and cancer recurrence. ⋯ Currently available evidence describes an association between peri-operative red blood cell transfusion and cancer recurrence, but this is mostly of low to critically low quality, with minimal control for residual confounding. Further research, at low risk of bias, is required to provide definitive evidence and inform practice.

Review[Red Blood Cell Transfusion - Indications, Informed Consent and Associated Risks].
The aim of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is to prevent or treat anemic tissue hypoxia in acute or chronic anemia. In 2022, approximately 3.2 million red blood cell transfusions were conducted in Germany. ⋯ Blood loss in particular increases the risk of an imbalance between oxygen supply and oxygen demand. Targeted, rational (restrictive) blood transfusion based on physiological transfusion triggers makes it possible to avoid organ injury due to anemic hypoxia.

The study aimed to develop a predictive model with machine learning (ML) algorithm, to predict and manage the need for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion during hip fracture surgery. ⋯ Our study firstly demonstrated that the RF model with 10 common variables might predict intraoperative RBC transfusion in hip fracture patients.

Review Meta AnalysisTreatment for women with postpartum iron deficiency anaemia.
Postpartum iron deficiency anaemia is caused by antenatal iron deficiency or excessive blood loss at delivery and might affect up to 50% of labouring women in low- and middle-income countries. Effective and safe treatment during early motherhood is important for maternal well-being and newborn care. Treatment options include oral iron supplementation, intravenous iron, erythropoietin, and red blood cell transfusion. ⋯ Protocol and previous versions are available: Protocol (2013) [DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD010861] Original review (2004) [DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD004222.pub2] Review update (2015) [DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD010861.pub2].
