Adhesion formation following abdominal wall hernia repair with prosthetic mesh may lead to intestinal obstruction and enterocutaneous fistula. Physical barriers, namely, human amniotic membrane (HAM) or Seprafilm (Genzyme, Cambridge, Mass., USA), a bio-absorbable, translucent membrane composed of carboxymethylcellulose and hyaluronic acid, have been reported to prevent postsurgical intra-abdominal adhesions. ⋯ HAM and Seprafilm proved to be an effective antiadhesive barrier in PPM repair of abdominal wall hernia.

[A clinical study on fresh amniotic membrane transplantation for treatment of severe ocular surface disorders at acute inflammatory and cicatricial stage].
To investigate the safety and evaluate the effect of fresh amniotic membrane transplantation to reconstruct the ocular surface with severe inflammation and scarring. ⋯ Fresh amniotic membrane can be used as a graft to reconstruct ocular surface. Such transplantation can effectively reduce neovascularization, fibrosis and inflammation. Our data indicated that complete removal of pathological tissues and perfect fixation of amniotic membrane graft are crucial steps in the reconstruction of ocular surface.

Fresh amniotic membrane transplantation for conjunctival surface reconstruction.
To determine whether fresh human amniotic membrane can be used to reconstruct the conjunctival detect created during symblepharon lysis. ⋯ Both fresh and preserved human amniotic membrane can be considered an ideal alternative substrate for conjunctival surface reconstruction during removal of severe symblepharon.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialApplication of freeze-dried amniotic membrane: a control trial at the donor site of split-thickness skin grafting.
Sixty five patients (51 males and 14 females) underwent a control trial of freeze-dried amniotic membrane applied in the form of split-thickness skin grafts over an area from which skin had been surgically removed. The average size of the grafts was 15 x 20 cm. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. ⋯ Pain, infection, and the progress of healing were monitored. Covering the wound with the amniotic membrane had good results in terms of pain reduction, but the promotion of healing and the prevention of infection were not demonstrated. Hyperemia and hypertrophic scar responses to the membrane in some cases were considered as disadvantages.
