As 2 novel peripheral nerve blocks, the erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) block can relieve postoperative pain in spinal surgery. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of ESPB versus TLIP block in patients undergoing spine surgery. ⋯ ESPB and TLIP block are 2 novel and effective block methods. Patients receiving ESPB had lower postoperative opioid consumption and postoperative pain scores compared with patients receiving TLIP block; there was no statistically significant difference's between the 2 groups in intraoperative opioid consumption, adverse events, and rescue analgesia.

Comparative efficacy of ultrasound guidance and fluoroscopy or computed tomography guidance in spinal nerve injections: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Spinal nerve injections have traditionally been performed under fluoroscopic (FL) and computed tomography (CT) guidance. Recently, ultrasound (US)-guided procedures have provided an alternative guidance approach that does not expose the patient and operator to radiation. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of US-guided spinal nerve injections compared with FL- or CT-guided spinal nerve injections. ⋯ Open Science Forum (Available from: https://osf.io/vt92w/ ).

Extensive research into potential sources of thoracic pain with or without referred pain into the chest wall has demonstrated that thoracic facet joints can be a potential source of pain confirmed by precise, diagnostic blocks.The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of medial branch blocks and radiofrequency neurotomy as a therapeutic thoracic facet joint intervention. ⋯ Chronic spinal pain, thoracic facet or zygapophysial joint pain, facet joint nerve blocks, medial branch blocks, controlled comparative local anesthetic blocks, diagnostic accuracy, radiofrequency neurotomy.

A systematic review of original research articles was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of lidocaine infusion in the treatment of adult patients with chronic neuropathic pain. ⋯ This qualitative review found insufficient, heterogenous evidence and therefore no recommendation can be made for lidocaine infusion treatment in patients with chronic neuropathic pain due to spinal cord injury, peripheral nerve injury, diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, or complex regional pain syndrome type II. Larger randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies are required to further establish the efficacy of lidocaine infusion in patients with these etiologies of chronic neuropathic pain.

The C1 spinal nerve is a fascinating anatomic structure owing to its wide range of variations. Throughout history, understanding of the cranial and spinal nerves has probably influenced the current conception of this nerve among anatomists. ⋯ Sensory functions of this nerve are more enigmatic; despite investigations into its dorsal rootlets, a dorsal root ganglion, and the relationships between this nerve and adjacent cranial and spinal nerves, there is still no consensus regarding its true anatomy. In this article, we review the available literature and discuss some of the developmental models that could potentially explain the wide range of variations and functions of the C1 nerve.
