Evaluation of Urology Residency Training and Perceived Resident Abilities in the United States.
To identify differences and potential deficiencies in urology residency training programs in the United States as they are perceived by residents/recent graduates and program directors. ⋯ Program directors and residents have differing perceptions regarding the education and resources associated with US urology residency training programs. US graduates of urology residency programs express a perceived lack of confidence in several procedures that are commonly encountered in a general urologic practice.

Data Driven Competitive Motivation Strategies in a Longitudinal Simulation Curriculum for Trauma Team Training.
A novel approach to trauma team simulation was used to enhance team performance in a cohort of general surgical residents. We implemented data driven debriefing using performance report cards and video footage of the simulations. We wanted to evaluate the technical and nontechnical skills developed by teams using this approach. ⋯ Adding data driven debriefing using performance report cards that assess both technical and CRM skills to a trauma team curriculum is a feasible and acceptable way to influence trainee performance using positive competitive motivation. More data are required to confirm the early patterns of improvement uncovered in CRM scoring. A positive correlation between technical skills and CRM skills raises important questions for future research.

The Effect and Use of Milestones in the Assessment of Neurological Surgery Residents and Residency Programs.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones on the assessment of neurological surgery residents. The authors sought to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and utility of this new framework in making judgments of progressive competence, its implementation within programs, and the influence on curricula. Residents were also surveyed to elicit the effect of Milestones on their educational experience and professional development. ⋯ The results of this study can be used by program leadership to help guide further implementation of the Milestones and program improvement. These results also help to guide the evolution of Milestones language and their implementation across specialties.

Automaticity of Force Application During Simulated Brain Tumor Resection: Testing the Fitts and Posner Model.
The Fitts and Posner model of motor learning hypothesized that with deliberate practice, learners progress through stages to an autonomous phase of motor ability. To test this model, we assessed the automaticity of neurosurgeons, senior residents, and junior residents when operating on 2 identical tumors using the NeuroVR virtual reality simulation platform. ⋯ "Experts" display significantly more automaticity when operating on identical simulated tumors separated by a series of different tumors using the NeuroVR platform. These results support the Fitts and Posner model of motor learning and are consistent with the concept that automaticity improves after completing residency training. The potential educational application of our findings is outlined related to neurosurgical resident training.

Diffusion of Robotic Technology Into Urologic Practice has Led to Improved Resident Physician Robotic Skills.
To investigate whether propagation of robotic technology into urologic practice and training programs has improved baseline urology resident trainee robotic skills. ⋯ Baseline resident trainee performance on basic robotic simulator exercises has improved over the past 3 years irrespective of robotic simulator access or console time.
