Aims/Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is considered a potential therapeutic agent for RA due to strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of NAC as an adjuvant therapy for RA. Methods A systematic search was conducted across five databases from inception to 1 August 2024, including CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, and Web of Science. ⋯ Additionally, NAC reduced inflammatory markers (erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR): MD = 3.00). However, the beneficial effects of NAC on oxidative stress in RA patients were not observed. Conclusion This meta-analysis demonstrated the efficacy of NAC in reducing inflammatory markers, improving joint tenderness, and swelling in patients with RA.

Amatoxin-containing mushroom poisoning occurs after consumption of certain mushroom species, of the genera Amanita, Lepiota and Galerina. Amanita phalloides is the most implicated species, responsible for over more than 90% of mushroom-related deaths. The α-amanitin is responsible for most of the observed effects. ⋯ Prognosis of this severe poisoning has greatly benefited from improved resuscitation techniques. Mortality is currently less than 10%. In the event of a suspected or confirmed case, referral to a Poison Control Center is warranted in order to establish the diagnosis and guide the medical management of patients in an early and appropriate way.

The review considers the principles of treatment of various forms of alcoholic liver disease from the point of view of the evidence base and clinical recommendations. The main therapy for severe alcoholic hepatitis is systemic glucocorticosteroids, their effect on survival is increased by the addition of antioxidants (N-acetylcysteine, ademethionine). The effect of ademetionine on the life expectancy of patients with alcoholic cirrhosis of Child-Pugh class A and B has been proven. The treatment of patients with mild forms of alcoholic liver disease is not well developed, and the evidence base for most of the drugs used is modest.

Efficacy and Safety of N-acetylcysteine for the Management of Chronic Pain in Adults: A Systematic Review & Meta-analysis.
To assess the efficacy and safety of N-acetylcysteine in the treatment of chronic pain. ⋯ While there is some evidence to indicate N-acetylcysteine may provide analgesic efficacy for certain pain conditions, there is insufficient evidence to provide definitive evidence on NAC in chronic pain management. Larger-size RCTs spanning a variety of chronic pain conditions are needed to determine N-acetylcysteine's role, if any, in pain medicine.

ReviewAntioxidant treatment to reduce mortality and serious adverse events in adult surgical patients: A systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.
Hyperoxia during anesthesia can increase cellular oxidative stress, and perioperative antioxidant treatment may reduce the resulting damage. The aim of this review was to evaluate risks and benefits of antioxidant treatment in surgical patients. We hypothesized that antioxidant treatment reduced mortality compared to placebo/no intervention. ⋯ We found a 26% relative risk reduction of mortality in surgical patients treated with antioxidants but the quality of evidence supporting our findings is low and influenced by clinical heterogeneity and high risk of systematic- and random errors.
