Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyThe efficacy of acetaminophen-caffeine compared to Ibuprofen in the control of postoperative pain after periodontal surgery: a crossover pilot study.
Previous studies showed that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have significant benefits in the control of pain after periodontal surgery. Acetaminophen (centrally acting NSAID) is believed to provide less analgesic efficacy than ibuprofen (centrally and peripherally acting NSAID). This study compared an alternative combination of acetaminophen, 500 mg, with caffeine, 30 mg, to ibuprofen, 400 mg, in pain management after periodontal surgeries. ⋯ Acetaminophen, 500 mg, with caffeine, 30 mg, can be used efficiently in controlling postoperative pain after open flap debridement, especially in patients with gastric ulcers or bleeding tendency because acetaminophen is less hazardous than ibuprofen.

Comparison of analgesic effect of tramadol alone and a combination of tramadol and paracetamol in day-care laparoscopic surgery.
To compare the analgesic efficacy of tramadol alone (1.5 mg kg(-1)) with a tramadol (1 mg kg(-1)) and paracetamol combination in day-care laparoscopic patients. ⋯ We conclude that reducing the dose of tramadol to 1 mg kg(-1) and combining it with paracetamol 1 g orally decreased the incidence of side effects of tramadol without reducing analgesic efficacy.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe prophylactic effect of rectal acetaminophen on postoperative pain and opioid requirements after adenotonsillectomy in children.
Postoperative pain in children is common after adenotonsillectomy. Rectal acetaminophen has been used effectively for postoperative pain management in small children. The aim of this randomized double blind study was to evaluate the prophylactic effect of rectal acetaminophen on postoperative pain management and opioid requirements in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy. ⋯ We conclude that prophylactic rectal acetaminophen is effective in reducing pain after adenotonsillectomy and postoperative analgesic requirement.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyIbuprofen and paracetamol for pain relief during medical abortion: a double-blind randomized controlled study.
To determine the efficacy of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug vs. paracetamol in pain relief during medical abortion and to evaluate whether nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs interfere with the action of misoprostol. ⋯ Ibuprofen was found to be more effective than paracetamol for pain reduction during medical abortion. A history of surgical or medical abortion was predictive for high pain scores. Despite its anti-prostaglandin effects, ibuprofen use did not interfere with the action of misoprostol.

The Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) In Stroke (PAIS) trial: a multicentre, randomised, placebo-controlled, phase III trial.
High body temperature in the first 12-24 h after stroke onset is associated with poor functional outcome. The Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) In Stroke (PAIS) trial aimed to assess whether early treatment with paracetamol improves functional outcome in patients with acute stroke by reducing body temperature and preventing fever. ⋯ Netherlands Heart Foundation.
