Patient education is a core component of treating fibromyalgia and central sensitization disorders. We sought to evaluate whether patients with fibromyalgia prefer virtual or in-person educational classes as part of their treatment program, identify underlying factors with their educational modality choice, and highlight benefits or barriers associated with in-person or online educational sessions. ⋯ As virtual education platforms become more widely available and may be easier to access than in-person options, it is important to understand patient preferences, benefits, and disadvantages of educational modalities to ensure education and patient outcomes remain equitable.

Health care providers' exposure to global surgical disparities is limited in current nursing and/or medical school curricula. For instance, global health is often associated with infectious diseases or maternal health without acknowledging the growing need for surgical care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We propose an international virtual hackathon based on neurosurgical patient cases in under-resourced settings as an educational tool to bring awareness to global surgical disparities and develop relationships among trainees in different countries. ⋯ An international virtual hackathon can be an educational tool to increase innovative ideas to address surgical disparities in LMICs and establish early collaborative relationships with medical trainees from different countries.

Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a severe condition that typically results from the ischemia and necrosis of heart muscle. Kruppel-like factor 6 (KLF6) can aggravate myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. This work aims to reveal its role and mechanism in hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-induced cardiomyocyte injury. ⋯ Additionally, WTAP stabilized KLF6 mRNA by regulating its m6A modification. Furthermore, WTAP knockdown rescued H/R-induced AC16 cell apoptosis, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and ferroptosis by decreasing KLF6 expression. Conclusion: WTAP-mediated m6A modification of KLF6 aggravated hypoxia/reoxygenation-induced apoptosis, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and ferroptosis of human cardiomyocytes, providing a therapeutic strategy for MI.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme which has been proven useful as a biomarker for bone turnover and inflammation. We hypothesized that high serum ALP levels are associated with increased complication rates following lumbar spinal fusion. ⋯ Elevated serum ALP in patients undergoing lumbar fusion procedures is associated with increased risk for multiple in-hospital complications as well as higher rates of readmission and reoperation.

Acute and chronic itch are prevalent and incapacitating, yet the neural mechanisms underlying both acute and chronic itch are just starting to be unraveled. Activated transcription factor 4 (ATF4) belongs to the ATF/CREB transcription factor family and primarily participates in the regulation of gene transcription. Our previous study has demonstrated that ATF4 is expressed in sensory neurons. ⋯ Furthermore, ATF4 interacts with the transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 4 (TRPV4) and inhibits its function without altering the expression or membrane trafficking of TRPV4 in sensory neurons. In addition, interference with ATF4 increases the itch sensitivity in nonhuman primates and enhances TRPV4 currents in nonhuman primates DRG neurons; ATF4 and TRPV4 also co-expresses in human sensory neurons. Our data demonstrate that ATF4 controls pruritus by regulating TRPV4 signaling through a nontranscriptional mechanism and identifies a potential new strategy for the treatment of pathological pruritus.
