Chronic pain conditions frequently co-occur, suggesting common risks and paths to prevention and treatment. Previous studies have reported genetic correlations among specific groups of pain conditions and reported genetic risk for within-individual multisite pain counts (≤7). Here, we identified genetic risk for multiple distinct pain disorders across individuals using 24 chronic pain conditions and genomic structural equation modeling (Genomic SEM). ⋯ Annotation identified pathways associated with organogenesis, metabolism, transcription, and DNA repair, with overrepresentation of strongly associated genes exclusively in brain tissues. Cross-reference with previous GWASs showed genetic overlap with cognition, mood, and brain structure. These results identify common genetic risks and suggest neurobiological and psychosocial mechanisms that should be targeted to prevent and treat cross-condition chronic pain.

Does the use of Probe-based Near Infrared Autofluorescence Parathyroid Detection Benefit Parathyroidectomy? A Randomized Single-center Clinical Trial.
To evaluate the benefits of probe-based near-infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF) parathyroid identification during parathyroidectomy. ⋯ Probe-based NIRAF detection can be a valuable intraoperative adjunct and educational tool for improving confidence in parathyroid gland identification, while potentially reducing the number of frozen sections required.

We sought to quantify the effects of in-house call(IHC) on sleep patterns and burnout among acute care surgeons (ACS). ⋯ ACS exhibit lower quality and reduced amount of sleep compared with an age-matched population. Furthermore, reduced sleep and decreased time since the last call led to increased feelings of daily burnout, accumulating in emotional exhaustion as measured on the MBI. A reevaluation of IHC requirements and patterns as well as identification of countermeasures to restore homeostatic wellness in ACS is essential to protect and optimize our workforce.

Neuroanesthesiology Quality Improvement Reporting Patterns: A Tertiary Medical Center Experience.
Understanding quality improvement (QI) reporting patterns is important for practice-based improvement and for prioritizing QI initiatives. The aim of this project was to identify major domains of neuroanesthesiology QI reports at a single academic institution with 2 hospital-based practice sites. ⋯ The majority of neuroanesthesiology QI reports fell into 6 domains: drug error, communication/documentation, equipment/device failure, oropharyngeal injury, skin injury, and vascular catheter dislodgement. Similar analyses from other centers can guide generalizability and potential utility of using QI reporting domains to inform the development of neuroanesthesiology quality measures and reporting frameworks.

Clinical methods to quantify brain injury related to neurosurgery are scarce. Circulating brain injury biomarkers have recently gained increased interest as new ultrasensitive measurement techniques have enabled quantification of brain injury through blood sampling. ⋯ Measuring circulating brain injury biomarkers could be a useful method for quantification of the impact on the brain after tumor surgery or neurosurgery in general.
