The NICE-SUGAR (Normoglycaemia in Intensive Care Evaluation and Survival Using Glucose Algorithm Regulation) Study: statistical analysis plan.
The Normoglycaemia in Intensive Care Evaluation and Survival Using Glucose Algorithm Regulation (NICE-SUGAR) Study is the largest study to date of glycaemic control in critically ill patients. ⋯ We have developed a pre-determined statistical analysis plan for the NICE-SUGAR Study. This plan will be followed to avoid analysis bias arising from prior knowledge of the study findings.

The RENAL (Randomised Evaluation of Normal vs. Augmented Level of Replacement Therapy) study: statistical analysis plan.
The Randomised Evaluation of Normal vs. Augmented Level of Replacement Therapy (RENAL) study is the largest interventional trial ever conducted in patients with acute renal failure. ⋯ We have developed a pre-determined statistical analysis plan for the RENAL trial. This plan will be adhered to in order to avoid introducing any analysis bias associated with prior knowledge of study findings.

Evaluation of modernisation of adult critical care services in England: time series and cost effectiveness analysis.
To evaluate the impact and cost effectiveness of a programme to transform adult critical care throughout England initiated in late 2000. ⋯ Substantial improvements in NHS critical care have occurred in England since 2000. While it is unclear which factors were responsible, collectively the interventions represented a highly cost effective use of NHS resources.

Errors in administration of parenteral drugs in intensive care units: multinational prospective study.
To assess on a multinational level the frequency, characteristics, contributing factors, and preventive measures of administration errors in parenteral medication in intensive care units. ⋯ Parenteral medication errors at the administration stage are common and a serious safety problem in intensive care units. With the increasing complexity of care in critically ill patients, organisational factors such as error reporting systems and routine checks can reduce the risk for such errors.

Prophylactic antiepileptic drug use is associated with poor outcome following ICH.
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with a risk of early seizure and guidelines recommend consideration of prophylactic antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) for some patients, although the utility is uncertain. ⋯ In this clinical trial cohort, seizures were rare after the first few hours following ICH. In addition, prophylactic AED use was associated with poor outcome independent of other established predictors. Given the potential for residual confounding in this cohort, a randomized trial needs to be performed.
