[Preemptive randomized, double-blind study with lornoxicam in gynecological surgery].
Lornoxicam is a non opioid analgesic belonging to the oxicam group. The aim of this study was to determine whether lornoxicam has a preemptive analgesic effect. ⋯ Lornoxicam administered preemptively appears to improve the quality of postoperative analgesia and lead to reduced consumption of opioid analgesics postoperatively in patients undergoing gynecological operations.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a glycine antagonist in neuropathic pain.
Nerve injury results in increases in spinal glutamate, which opens the NMDA ionophore channel, causing an influx of calcium. A glycine-binding site must be occupied for the channel to open. GV196771 is a selective antagonist of the glycine-binding site of the NMDA ionophore. ⋯ Although the glycine antagonists show anti-hyperalgesic action in animal models of neuropathic pain, GV196771 does not appear to be an effective treatment in subjects with chronic neuropathic pain. This may be due to insufficient penetration of GV196771 to central sites of action, differences between the human and animal glycine receptors, or differences between neuropathic pain in animal models and humans.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the comparative efficacy of three commonly used analgesics (Panadeine, Diflunisal and Etodolac) in the control of pain after third molar surgery under local anaesthesia. ⋯ Diflunisal is superior in the control of pain following third molar surgery under local anaesthesia than either Panadeine or Etodolac, and has few side effects.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialPostoperative analgesia by femoral nerve block with ropivacaine 0.2% after major knee surgery: continuous versus patient-controlled techniques.
This prospective study compared the efficacy and adverse effects after knee surgery of ropivacaine 0.2% administered as patient-controlled femoral analgesia (PCFA), as a continuous femoral infusion (Inf), or as both (PCFA+Inf). ⋯ All 3 strategies provided effective pain relief. PCFA resulted in a lower consumption of ropivacaine (toxic and financial impact). PCFA + Inf does not improve postoperative analgesia.

Pain intensity and postoperative pulmonary complications among the elderly after abdominal surgery.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether postoperative pain intensity differs between elderly abdominal surgery patients in whom postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) develop and those in whom they do not. ⋯ Results provide support for viewing pain as a factor that contributes to the development of PPCs among the elderly population after abdominal surgery. Therefore, nursing interventions of pain assessment and management, deep breathing, and ambulation may influence the incidence of this outcome.
