HbA1c Cutoff for Prediabetes and Diabetes Based on Oral Glucose Tolerance Test in Obese Children and Adolescents.
Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is a traditional diagnostic tool for diabetes. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is an alternative method used in adults; however, its application in youths has been controversial. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of HbA1c and determined optimal cutoff points for detecting prediabetes and diabetes in youth. ⋯ Pediatric criteria for HbA1c remain unclear, therefore, we recommend the combination of fasting and 2-hour glucose levels, in addition to HbA1c, in the diagnosis of childhood prediabetes and diabetes.

Self-efficacy has been shown to be positively correlated with self-care behaviour and glycaemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, such evidence is lacking in the Malaysian primary care setting. The objectives of this study were to i) determine the levels of self-efficacy, self-care behaviour and glycaemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Malaysian primary care setting ii) determine the relationship between self-efficacy, self-care behaviour and glycaemic control iii) determine the factors associated with glycaemic control. ⋯ This study demonstrated that higher self-efficacy was correlated with improved self-care behaviour and better glycaemic control. Findings of this study suggest the importance of including routine use of self-efficacy measures in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in primary care.

Blood Glucose Variability: A Strong Independent Predictor of Neurological Outcomes in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.
In patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), increased glucose variability (GV) is associated with increased mortality and cerebral infarction; however, there are no reports demonstrating an association between GV and neurological outcome. This study investigated whether GV had an independent effect on neurological outcomes in patients with SAH in the intensive care unit. ⋯ Increased GV was an independent predictor of unfavorable neurological outcomes in patients with SAH.

Higher dietary total antioxidant capacity is inversely related to prediabetes: A case-control study.
Dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) has been proposed as a tool for assessing the intake of antioxidants. The relationship between DTAC and blood glucose levels has been investigated mostly in healthy people. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between DTAC and prediabetes morbidity in a case-control study. ⋯ The DTAC score appears useful when assessing the antioxidant capacity of diet and to better understand the relationship between diet and prediabetes morbidity. Future studies are needed to confirm the findings from the present study in other populations.

Review Meta Analysis
Effect of probiotics and synbiotics on blood glucose: a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials.
High fasting blood glucose (FBG) can lead to chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular and kidney diseases. Consuming probiotics or synbiotics may improve FBG. A systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials was conducted to clarify the effect of probiotic and synbiotic consumption on FBG levels. ⋯ This meta-analysis suggests that probiotic and synbiotic supplementation may be beneficial in lowering FBG in adults with high baseline FBG (≥7 mmol/L) and that multispecies probiotics may have more impact on FBG than single species.
