Accuracy of blood glucose measurements using the NOVA StatStrip® glucometer during cardiac surgery: a prospective observational study.
The Nova StatStrip® Glucose Hospital Meter System (Nova Biomedical, Waltham, MA, USA) is United States Food and Drug Administration approved for point-of-care use in critically ill patients, but its use during cardiac surgery has not been evaluated. In this study, we compare glucose values obtained during cardiac surgery by StatStrip® with values obtained by a blood gas analyzer. ⋯ Arterial blood glucose measurement by StatStrip was accurate before CPB, but lacked accuracy during and after CPB. Glucose values should be interpreted with caution when intensive glucose control protocols are being used during cardiac surgery.

Comparison of two glycemic discharge goals in ED patients with hyperglycemia, a randomized trial.
Hyperglycemia is commonly encountered in the ED; the importance of glucose reduction in patients well enough to be discharged is unknown. ⋯ In the intention-to-treat analysis, ED length of stay and 7-day outcomes were not significantly different whether moderate or loose glycemic control was pursued. However, the length of stay for those with discharge glucose <350 mg/dL was approximately 29 min longer. ED glycemic control did not appear to be associated negative short-term outcomes. Glucose reduction in well-appearing ED patients may consume time and resources without conferring short- or long-term benefits.

Effect of structured self-monitoring of blood glucose, with and without additional TeleCare support, on overall glycaemic control in non-insulin treated Type 2 diabetes: the SMBG Study, a 12-month randomized controlled trial.
To examine the impact of structured self-monitoring of blood glucose, with or without TeleCare support, on glycaemic control in people with sub-optimally controlled Type 2 diabetes. ⋯ Structured self-monitoring of blood glucose provides clinical and statistical improvements in glycaemic control in Type 2 diabetes. No additional benefit, over and above the use of structured self-monitoring of blood glucose, was observed in glycaemic control with the addition of once-monthly TeleCare support. Nebulized salbutamol diminish the blood glucose fluctuation in the treatment of non-oliguric hyperkalemia of premature infants.
Hyperkalemia is a risky and potentially life-threatening condition in pre-term infants. Glucose-insulin infusion has been considered a major therapeutic way for non-oligouric hyperkalemia but affects the stability of blood sugar level. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of salbutamol nebulization compared to glucose-insulin infusion for the treatment of non-oliguric hyperkalemia in premature infants. ⋯ Salbutamol nebulization is not only as effective as glucose-insulin infusion for treating non-oliguric hyperkalemia in premature infants but can avoid potential side effects such as vigorous blood glucose fluctuations.

Randomized Controlled TrialConsuming snacks mid-afternoon compared with just after lunch improves mean amplitude of glycaemic excursions in patients with type 2 diabetes: A randomized crossover clinical trial.
Our aim was to explore the acute effects of consuming snacks at different times on glucose excursions in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). ⋯ These results suggest that consuming snacks well separated from lunch may be an effective way to suppress postprandial glucose levels and glycaemic excursions.
