Few studies have assessed sex differences in the management of suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We aimed to compare the evaluation, treatment, and outcomes between males and females with suspected ACS in the emergency department. Data were obtained from a prospective registry of acute chest pain involving 21 emergency departments in Shandong Province, China. ⋯ Women with non-ST-elevation chest pain in China received suboptimal treatment in the emergency department. However, their clinical outcomes were not significantly different from those of men. Further studies are needed to determine the causes and impacts of these sex differences.

The association between the red cell distribution width (RDW) and long-term mortality in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has not been clearly established. ⋯ In patients with ICH, RDW independently predicted long-term mortality. Median RDW levels within the first month after admission were better predictors of long-term mortality compared with RDW levels on admission. Additionally, median RDW-CV showed superior predictive capacity than median RDW-SD for long-term mortality following ICH.

Physical activity can reduce morbidity and mortality among adults with diabetes. Although rural disparities in physical activity exist among the general population, it is not known how these disparities manifest among adults with diabetes. ⋯ Adults with diabetes are less likely to meet the physical activity recommendations than those without, and differences exist according to urban/rural status. Improving physical activity among rural residents with diabetes may mitigate disparities in diabetes-related mortality.

Adults hospitalized for cardiovascular events are at high risk for postdischarge mortality. Screening of psychosocial risk is prioritized by the Joint Commission. We tested whether key patient-reported psychosocial and behavioral measures could predict posthospitalization mortality in a cohort of adults hospitalized for a cardiovascular event. ⋯ Patient-reported measures of employment status, perceived health competence, and exercise frequency independently predict mortality after a cardiac hospitalization. Incorporating these brief, valid measures into hospital-based screening may help with prognostication and targeting patients for resources during post-discharge transitions of care.

Background: The high mortality rates of patients who are resuscitated from cardiac arrest (CA) are attributed to post cardiac arrest syndrome (PCAS). This study evaluated the effect of hyperoxygenation and targeted temperature management (TTM) on PCAS in rats with different causes of CA. Methods and Results: One hundred sixty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were equally divided into asphyxial and dysrhythmic groups. ⋯ Compared with NO-NT (57.7% ± 14.9% and 40.3% ± 7.8%), the collagen volume fraction and the proportion of fluoro-jade B-positive area in HO-HT (14.0% ± 5.7% and 28.0% ± 13.3%) were significantly reduced. Conclusion: The beneficial effects of hyperoxygenation and TTM are dependent on the cause of arrest: hyperoxygenation benefits asphyxial, whereas TTM benefits dysrhythmic CA. The combination of hyperoxygenation and TTM could effectively improve the functional outcome of PCAS regardless of the cause of CA.
