Cystic fibrosis is a genetic and multisystemic disease. The main comorbidity in adulthood is respiratory involvement, with the presence of bronchiectasis, chronic bronchial infection and airflow obstruction. ⋯ This novel treatment goes a step further in the management of this disease, it is able to improve the production of defective CFTR protein and increase its expression on the cell surface, thus achieving a better functioning of ion exchange, fluidizing respiratory secretions and reducing airflow obstruction. In addition, there are currently different lines of research aimed at correcting the genetic defect that causes cystic fibrosis.

The objective of the systematic review is to analyze the efficacy of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOAC) in the prophylaxis of thrombosis in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). We searched for clinical trials, cohort studies and meta-analyses published from January 1, 2012 to September 30, 2022. ⋯ The proportion of patients with severe bleeding as side effect are similar in those treated with DOAC and with VKA. The results argue against the use of DOAC in the treatment of patients with thrombotic APS.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important health and social problem. The mechanism of damage of this entity could be divided into two phases: (1) a primary acute injury because of the traumatic event; and (2) a secondary injury due to the hypotension and hypoxia generated by the previous lesion, which leads to ischemia and necrosis of neural cells. Cerebral edema is one of the most important prognosis markers observed in TBI. ⋯ Despite the relevance of FT in the early management of TBI, there are few clinical trials regarding which solution is better to apply. The aim of this study is to provide a narrative review about the role of the different types of FT used in the daily clinical practice on the management of TBI. To achieve this objective, a physiopathological approach to this entity will be also performed, summarizing why the different types of FT are used.

Prion diseases are a group of neurodegenerative diseases. The disease-causing agent is a protein (PrP), that is normally produced in the nervous system, aggregated in an abnormal form. The abnormal protein, known as prion (PrPSc), is capable of self-propagation promoting the misfolding of the normal protein (PrP). ⋯ The use of highly sensitive and specific diagnostic tools, such as MRI and RT-QuIC, may aid in the diagnosis. Neuropathological examination of brain tissue ensures a definite diagnosis. At present, no treatment significantly improves the course of prion diseases; however, an early diagnosis is of paramount importance for patient care decision planning, infection control purposes, and genetic counseling.
