Multicenter Study Comparative StudyDoes age affect surgical outcomes in patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy? Results from the prospective multicenter AOSpine International study on 479 patients.
In general, older patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) are felt to have lower recovery potential following surgery due to increased degenerative pathology, comorbidities, reduced physiological reserves and age-related changes to the spinal cord. This study aims to determine whether age truly is an independent predictor of surgical outcome and to provide evidence to guide practice and decision-making. ⋯ Older age is an independent predictor of functional status in patients with DCM. However, patients over 65 with DCM still achieve functionally significant improvement after surgical decompression.

A longitudinal study of cortical grey matter lesion subtypes in relapse-onset multiple sclerosis.
Cortical grey matter (GM) lesions are common in multiple sclerosis (MS), but little is known about their temporal evolution. We investigated this in people with relapsing-remitting (RR) and secondary progressive (SP) MS. ⋯ New cortical GM lesions rarely arise from the WM and the rate of new IC lesion formation is not closely linked with WM lesion accrual. IC lesion formation appears to be more common in SPMS than RRMS.

Impact of localisation of deep brain stimulation electrodes on motor and neurobehavioural outcomes in Parkinson's disease.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) represents a well-established treatment in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) for motor signs, but it is still debated concerning psychiatric effects. ⋯ Stimulation of zona incerta may influence appetite and weight gain. Our clinical results seem to support a personalised DBS-targeted Parkinson therapy including individual motor and non-motor parameters.

Comparative StudyAutomated brain volumetrics in multiple sclerosis: a step closer to clinical application.
Whole brain volume (WBV) estimates in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) correlate more robustly with clinical disability than traditional, lesion-based metrics. Numerous algorithms to measure WBV have been developed over the past two decades. We compare Structural Image Evaluation using Normalisation of Atrophy-Cross-sectional (SIENAX) to NeuroQuant and MSmetrix, for assessment of cross-sectional WBV in patients with MS. ⋯ In the analysed population, NeuroQuant and MSmetrix both quantified cross-sectional WBV with comparable statistical agreement to SIENAX, a well-validated cross-sectional tool that has been used extensively in MS clinical studies.

Neuronal autoantibodies in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis.
Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of neuronal autoantibodies (NAbs) in a large consecutive series with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS) and to elucidate the clinical and laboratory clues for detection of NAbs in this prototype of frequent, drug-resistant epilepsy syndrome. ⋯ This first systematic screening study of various NAbs showed 22.5% seropositivity belonging mostly to VGKC-complex antibodies in a large consecutive series of patients with MTLE-HS. Our results indicated a VGKC-complex autoimmunity-related subgroup in the syndrome of MTLE-HS.
