Some studies have argued that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) is generally activated in response to aversive information, including pain, negative affect, and cognitive conflict. Other studies have claimed that the dACC has subdivisions, and each division has a specific function. By manipulating emotionally and cognitively aversive cues, the present study determined whether the dACC is generally responsive to aversiveness or it has subdivisions for specific forms of aversiveness. ⋯ We also found that the superior part of the dACC was uniquely activated in response to cognitively aversive cues, partially supporting the functional segregation account. Collectively, our results provide evidence that the specific locus of the dACC is generally responsive to distinctive motivational information, whereas the other loci may have segregated functions. Discussion includes recent neurocomputational theories that seem to satisfactorily account for the present results.

Melatonin (MT) has been reported to control and prevent Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the clinic; however, the effect and mechanism of MT on AD have not been specifically described. Therefore, the main purpose of this meta-analysis was to explore the effect and mechanism of MT on AD models by studying behavioural indicators and pathological features. Seven databases were searched and 583 articles were retrieved. ⋯ Among the pathological features, subgroup analysis found that MT may ease the symptoms of AD mainly by reducing the deposition of Aβ40 and Aβ42 in the cortex. In addition, MT exerted a superior effect on ameliorating the learning ability of senescence-related and metabolic AD models, and corrected the memory deficit of the toxin-induced AD model. The study was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42021226594).

As a neuromodulator, zinc regulates synaptic plasticity, learning and memory. Synaptic zinc is also a crucial factor in the development of toxic forms of amyloid beta protein and, subsequently, of Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Therefore, efforts to pinpoint mechanisms underlying zinc-dependent cognitive functions might aid AD research, by providing potential novel targets for drugs. ⋯ ELM was also absent in old WT male mice, and all female mice regardless of their genotype. Acute application of TC-G 1008 (10 mg/kg) reversed a deficit in two of three ELM components in old WT male mice, and had no promnesic effect on consolidation interference of ELM in adult WT mice. We discuss the possible neurobiological mechanisms and the translational value of these results for potential add-on pharmacotherapy of AD aimed at the zinc-sensing receptor.

Genetic analyses have linked BTBD9 to restless legs syndrome (RLS) and sleep regulation. Btbd9 knockout mice show RLS-like motor restlessness. Previously, we found hyperactivity of cerebellar Purkinje cells (PCs) in Btbd9 knockout mice, which may contribute to the motor restlessness observed. ⋯ However, Syngap1 heterozygous knockout mice showed nocturnal, instead of diurnal, motor restlessness. Our results suggest that SYNGAP1 deficiency may not contribute directly to the RLS-like motor restlessness observed in Btbd9 knockout mice. Finally, we found that PC-specific Btbd9 knockout mice exhibited deficits in motor coordination and balance similar to Btbd9 knockout mice, suggesting that the motor effect of BTBD9 in PCs is cell-autonomous.

Intelligence is the ability to recognize and understand objective things, and use knowledge and experience to solve problems. Highly intelligent people show the ability to switch between different thought patterns and shift their mental focus. This suggests a link between intelligence and the dynamic interaction of brain networks. ⋯ High variability in these areas indicates flexible connectivity patterns, which may contribute to cognitive processes such as attention selection. In addition, performance intelligence was related to greater temporal variability in the functional connectivity patterns of the salience network. Thus, this study revealed a close relationship between performance intelligence and high variability in brain networks involved in attentional choice, spatial orientation, and cognitive control.
