Randomized Controlled Trial
Prevalence of neck and low back pain in community-dwelling adults in Spain: a population-based national study.
Cross-sectional epidemiological study. ⋯ This Spanish population-based survey showed that neck and low back pain are prevalent and highly associated between them, more frequent in female (particularly neck pain) and associated to worse self-reported health status. Individuals with neck and low back pain were more likely than those without pain to have depression and other painful conditions, including headache and osteoporosis.

Repeat use of human recombinant bone morphogenetic protein-2 for second level lumbar arthrodesis.
Prospective randomized controlled animal model. ⋯ rhBMP-2 appears to be successful in promoting intertransverse fusions when used in both primary and repeat fusion environments. The infrequent development of antibodies to rhBMP-2 after re-exposure occurs without a predictable time course suggesting that host immunologic variation may play a role. This animal study would tend to support early clinical data emerging on the reuse of BMP-2 for lumbar fusion, suggesting an acceptable fusion rate without a high incidence of complications.

Coaptive film versus subcuticular suture: comparing skin closure time after posterior spinal instrumented fusion in pediatric patients with spinal deformity.
A prospective, randomized trial comparing skin closure time between coaptive film and subcuticular Monocryl sutures in children undergoing posterior instrumented spinal fusion. ⋯ Coaptive film is a time-saving option for skin closure following pediatric spine surgery with comparable cosmetic results and no difference in complication rates.

Neck pain in Hong Kong: a telephone survey on consequences and health service utilization.
A regionally representative telephone survey using a 2-stage randomization process. ⋯ Neck pain is highly prevalent with an increasing impact in Hong Kong. More than one-third of neck pain patients suffered from moderate to severe pain and around 20% of them had to limit their work. About 25% of neck pain patient have consulted medical or health professionals. Physiotherapy and private medical clinic were the 2 service providers with high percentage of perceived complete improvement. There was a general trend that more neck pain patients used complementary therapies.

Low back pain in primary care: costs of care and prediction of future health care utilization.
Cost of illness study alongside a randomized controlled trial. ⋯ Interventions designed to reduce high health care costs for LBP should focus on patients with severe LBP and depressive comorbidity. Our results add to the economic understanding of LBP care and may give guidance for future actions on health care improvement and cost reduction.
