The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of zinc, vitamin D, and their co-supplementation versus placebo on changes in the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) score, serum cortisol level, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in obese/overweight patients with depressive symptoms. ⋯ Supplementation with zinc, vitamin D, or in combination for 12 wk yielded significant beneficial effects on the BDI-II score in obese or overweight patients with BDI-II ≥10.

Widespread vitamin D deficiency and its sex-specific association with adiposity in Chinese children and adolescents.
Vitamin D is involved in various physiologic and pathologic processes in the human body. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and the association of adiposity indicators with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) in Chinese children and adolescents. ⋯ Vitamin D deficiency was widespread and its sex-specific association with an excess of body fat in Chinese children and adolescents. The findings indicate that targeted screening and treatment guidelines may be useful.

Effect of ultra-processed diet on gut microbiota and thus its role in neurodegenerative diseases.
The current dietary pattern is characterized by high consumption of ultra-processed foods and lower consumption of fiber and vegetables, environmental factors that are associated directly with the current incidence of chronic metabolic diseases. Diet is an environmental factor that influences the diversity and functionality of the gut microbiota, where dietary changes have a direct action on their homeostasis. ⋯ From a systematic search, the present review analyzes the relationship and effect of the current feeding pattern, with the dysregulation of the microbiota and its influence on the development of cognitive decline. Because diagnosis of NDs is usually at late stages, this review highlights the importance of a search for stricter public health strategies regarding access to and development of ultra-processed foods.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common genetic kidney disease characterized by multiple and bilateral cystic dilation of renal tubules. Hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, systemic inflammation, and accelerated atherosclerosis are alterations found at a very early stage of the disease and are responsible for increasing both cardiovascular risks and progression toward end-stage renal disease. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of the use of 1.6 g α-lipoic acid (ALA) daily for 3 and 6 on the main markers of systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and atherosclerosis, as well as on nutritional, cardiovascular, and psychocognitive parameters, in ADPKD patients with CKD stage G2/G3 Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes chronic kidney disease (KDIGO) compared to controls. ⋯ We suggest an early and careful monitoring of traditional and non-traditional cardiovascular risk factors in patients with ADPKD. Moreover, we suggest the use of ALA, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutraceutical with few side effects. Additionally, it is important to evaluate the cognitive abilities, psychological health, and quality of life of patients with ADPKD, especially at the early stage of disease.

Malnutrition in older adults: Correlations with social, diet-related, and neuropsychological factors.
The number of older adults is increasing rapidly. Malnutrition is a major problem in this age group, which may adversely affect health and quality of life. Several physiological, socioeconomic, and neuropsychological factors can lead to malnutrition. ⋯ Nutritional screening should be performed frequently in all community-dwelling older adults. Health experts should perform nutritional screening in all community-dwelling older adults as part of secondary prevention, and nutrition counselling and support should be offered in those at risk for malnutrition.
