Continuous postprandial hyperglycemia is associated with the onset of cardiovascular disease. In recent years, the mRNA expression of inflammation-related genes in peripheral blood leukocytes has been shown to be induced by an increase in blood glucose levels. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the expression of inflammation-related genes in peripheral blood leukocytes in response to an increase in blood glucose from individuals who consumed two kinds of breakfast meals with different glycemic indexes (GIs). ⋯ The intake of a low-GI breakfast for 1 wk in healthy Japanese men resulted in lower postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels, which were accompanied by a reduced expression of inflammation-related genes in peripheral blood leukocytes.

Supplementation of parenteral nutrition (PN) admixtures with other parenteral drugs may be desired especially in the case of polypharmacy and limited vascular access. Metronidazole (MTZ) is administered in surgical and critically ill patients often requiring concomitant nutritional therapy in the form of parenteral nutrition. The aim of the study was to evaluate the possibility of the concomitant administration of MTZ with PN admixtures from one container. ⋯ Results showed the physicochemical compatibility and stability of PN admixtures supplemented with MTZ at the dose of 1500 mg. Such formulations can be stored at a temperature of 5°C for up to 7 d before administration to the patient.

Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) have an increased risk for loss of skeletal muscle mass. Ultrasonography (US) is a safe and promising method to evaluate muscle mass. In this study, we aimed to assess the frequency and clinical associations of low muscle mass status in patients with SSc, investigate the correlations between muscle mass sonographically measured regional muscle thicknesses (MTs), and explore the utility of US in predicting low muscle mass. ⋯ Low muscle mass is prevalent in SSc and patients with diffuse disease are at particular risk for this condition. US measurement of abdominal and calf MTs may be used as a screening method to detect low muscle mass due to its high sensitivity and negative predictive value.

The aims of this study was to investigate the association of phase angle (PA) with sarcopenia and its components and to evaluate the effectiveness of PA in sarcopenia diagnosis in older men (>65 y of age) with cancer. ⋯ PA is related to diagnostic components of sarcopenia, HGS and SMI. PA can be useful in the diagnosis of sarcopenia in older male patients with cancer. The cutoff value proposed in this study was 4.25°.

Observational Study
Nutritional assessment and factors affecting dietary intake in patients with cirrhosis: A single-center observational study.
Malnutrition is predictor of morbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. We investigated prevalence of malnutrition and factors affecting dietary intake in patients with cirrhosis. ⋯ Malnutrition seen in 65% of patients. Total calories and protein intake was significantly low compared with recommendation even in well-nourished patients. Distension of abdomen, social myth about diet, and low sodium in diet were key factors affecting dietary intake in patients with cirrhosis and malnutrition.
