Multicenter StudyA novel isotonic balanced electrolyte solution with 1% glucose for intraoperative fluid therapy in neonates: results of a prospective multicentre observational postauthorisation safety study (PASS).
Neonates have a higher metabolic rate and an increased risk of perioperative hypoglycemia and lipolysis, but during anesthesia, both oxygen consumption and metabolic rate are decreased, and this may lead to reduced intraoperative glucose requirements. ⋯ The study shows that the intraoperative use of an isotonic balanced electrolyte solution with 1% glucose and a mean infusion rate of 10 ml·kg(-1) ·h(-1) helps to avoid acid-base dysbalance, hyponatraemia, hypoglycemia, ketoacidosis, and hyperglycemia in surgical neonates. A careful intraoperative monitoring and adaptation of the infusion rate as needed is crucial because the glucose and fluid requirements may vary widely between subjects.

Multicenter StudyCurrent treatment practices of venous thromboembolism in children admitted to pediatric intensive care units.
To describe current treatment practices of VTE in patients admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and compare these practices to published guidelines. ⋯ Confirmed VTEs in patients admitted to PICUs are most frequently treated with systemic anticoagulation; however, more intensive treatments such as systemic thrombolysis and surgical or interventional procedures are not uncommon in this critically ill population. Current practices deviate from the published antithrombotic guidelines developed for the general pediatric population.

Multicenter StudyThe 'dark' side of sedation: 12 years of office-based pediatric deep sedation for electroretinography in the dark.
Analyze pediatric ERG data for adverse events, interventions, and outcomes of propofol sedations performed in near-complete darkness. ⋯ We demonstrated that pediatric sedation is a safe, efficient, and a cost-effective method for measuring ERGs in a challenging environment. The incidence of minor complications is low and appears similar to other studies of propofol sedation.

Multicenter StudyA novel isotonic-balanced electrolyte solution with 1% glucose for intraoperative fluid therapy in children: results of a prospective multicentre observational post-authorization safety study (PASS).
The recommendations for intraoperative fluid therapy in children have been adapted from hypotonic to isotonic electrolyte solutions with lower glucose concentrations (1-2.5% instead of 5%) to avoid hyponatremia and hyperglycemia. ⋯ The studied isotonic-balanced electrolyte solution with 1% glucose helps to avoid perioperative acid-base imbalance, hyponatremia, hyperglycemia, and ketoacidosis in infants and toddlers and may therefore enhance patient safety.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyAirway responses to desflurane during maintenance of anesthesia and recovery in children with laryngeal mask airways.
We sought to characterize the airway responses to desflurane during maintenance of and emergence from anesthesia in children whose airways were supported with laryngeal mask airways (LMAs). ⋯ When an LMA is used during desflurane anesthesia in children, fewer airway events occur when it is removed when the child is awake. Although the time to discharge from recovery was not delayed and no child required overnight admission, caution should be exercised when using an LMA in children who are anesthetized with desflurane.
