Asthma and the prospective risk of anaphylactic shock and other allergy diagnoses in a large integrated health care delivery system.
The association between asthma and anaphylaxis remains poorly understood. ⋯ In this insured population, asthma was prospectively associated with increased risk of anaphylactic shock and other allergy diagnoses. However, the effect of asthma severity was not consistent across outcome measures.

Respiratory medication prescriptions before and after bariatric surgery.
Increased body mass index is associated with asthma and frequent respiratory complaints. Bariatric surgery often results in rapid weight loss associated with an improved respiratory status. ⋯ Respiratory medication use decreases significantly after bariatric surgery. A secondary benefit of bariatric surgery may include a decrease in respiratory symptoms and concomitant medication use.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEfficacy and safety of levocetirizine in improving symptoms and health-related quality of life in US adults with seasonal allergic rhinitis: a randomized, placebo-controlled study.
Levocetirizine, a second-generation antihistamine for symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria, has not been previously studied in US patients. ⋯ Levocetirizine was well tolerated and was significantly more effective than placebo in improving the naso-ocular symptoms and health-related quality of life in US patients with SAR.

To review the effect of increasing age on the immune system and some of its clinical implications. ⋯ The process of aging is accompanied by diverse changes in immunity. Several therapeutic approaches are under investigation, including cytokine therapy, hormonal replacement, antioxidant supplementation, and caloric restriction, to attenuate or potentially reverse immunosenescence.
