Defining the Boundaries of Patient Perception in Spinal Cord Stimulation Programming.
Recent developments in spinal cord stimulation (SCS) programming have initiated new modalities of imperceptible stimulation. However, the boundaries of sensory perception are not well defined. The BEnchtop NEuromodulation Following endIng of Trial study aimed to create a map of perceptual threshold responses across a broad range of SCS parameters and programming to inform subperception therapy design. ⋯ In contrast to previous work investigating narrower ranges, PW primarily influenced PT, independently of frequency. Paresthesia quality was primarily influenced by pulse frequency. These findings advance our understanding of SCS therapy and may be used to improve future novel neuromodulation paradigms.

Comparing the Efficacy of Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation With Conventional Medical Management in Patients With Chronic Postsurgical Inguinal Pain: Post Hoc Analyzed Results of the SMASHING Study.
Approximately 10% of patients who undergo inguinal hernia repair or Pfannenstiel incision develop chronic (> three months) postsurgical inguinal pain (PSIP). If medication or peripheral nerve blocks fail, a neurectomy is the treatment of choice. However, some patients do not respond to this treatment. In such cases, stimulation of the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) appears to significantly reduce chronic PSIP in selected patients. ⋯ The Clinicaltrials.gov registration number for the study is NCT02349659.

Two-Staged Sacral Neuromodulation for the Treatment of Nonobstructive Urinary Retention: A Multicenter Study Assessing Predictors of Success.
The aims of this study were to 1) determine the success rate of the tined lead test phase in patients with nonobstructive urinary retention (NOUR), 2) determine predictive factors of a successful test phase in patients with NOUR, and 3) determine long-term treatment efficacy and satisfaction in patients with NOUR. ⋯ A history of psychiatric illness, including PTSD, in women with NOUR increased the odds of first stage SNM success 3.92 times. A previous transurethral resection of the prostate and/or bladder neck incision in men increased the odds of success 7.71 times. In addition, a ten-year age increase was associated with an OR of 0.43 in men and 0.74 in women, indicating a 2.3- and 1.3-times decreased odds of success, respectively.

Multiphase Spinal Cord Stimulation in Participants With Chronic Back or Leg Pain: Results of the BENEFIT-02 Randomized Clinical Trial.
This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of a new charge-distributed multiphase stimulation paradigm during an extended spinal cord stimulation (SCS) trial. ⋯ The Clinicaltrials.gov registration number for the study is NCT03594266.

Treatment of Refractory Low Back Pain Using Passive Recharge Burst in Patients Without Options for Corrective Surgery: Findings and Results From the DISTINCT Study, a Prospective Randomized Multicenter Controlled Trial.
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is effective for relieving chronic intractable pain conditions. The Dorsal spInal cord STImulatioN vs mediCal management for the Treatment of low back pain study evaluates the effectiveness of SCS compared with conventional medical management (CMM) in the treatment of chronic low back pain in patients who had not undergone and were not candidates for lumbar spine surgery. ⋯ The Clinicaltrials.gov registration number for the study is NCT04479787.
