Scattered reports exist in the medical literature regarding facet tropism. However, this finding has had mixed conclusions regarding its origin and impact on the normal spine. ⋯ Long-term analyses of patients are necessary to elucidate relationships between associated findings and facet tropism. In addition, a universally agreed definition that is more precise should be developed for future investigative studies.

A meta-analysis was performed to compare incidence rates of radiographic and surgical proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) between upper thoracic (UT) and lower thoracic (LT) vertebrae as site of upper instrumented vertebrae (UIV) endpoints for long fusion surgery in adult spinal deformity (ASD). ⋯ Radiographic PJK is a very common complication of long fusion surgery in adult spinal deformity with an incidence rate of 32.2%. Surgical PJK has an incidence rate of 6.7% and should be seriously considered. The pooled results indicate that choosing UT vertebrae as the site of UIV could decrease the incidence rates of radiographic and surgical PJK.

Acupuncture anesthesia originated from the pain relief and pain prevention theory in acupuncture and moxibustion. This technique is a new exploration of anesthesiology and an original achievement of China, representing a landmark combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine. ⋯ Acupuncture anesthesia was initiated in 1958, and, reflecting the historical background of China after the 1960s, the use of this technique spread widely throughout the country. Reaching other countries after 1971, acupuncture anesthesia had a significant influence, drawing attention from medical academia worldwide. Thus, acupuncture anesthesia has made a special contribution to the medical science of modern China.

More data regarding complications in neurosurgery residents' cases are needed to assess patients' safety during hands-on surgical education. ⋯ The results of the current study in addition to the literature on neurosurgery resident training support the safety of supervised early surgical education for shunt surgery.

A retrospective review of the surgical outcome for patients with craniopharyngioma (CP) treated in a single neurosurgical center with surgical resection using visualization to ensure hypothalamic preservation. ⋯ This study has shown that radical surgical resection of CP using microsurgical excision can be effective with a good patient outcome without more limitations on each individual tumor of distinct features despite the impact of recent endoscopic techniques on CP surgery. The surgical approach depends on a direct and wider visualization of CP located in the midline with preserving hypothalamic structures by identifying some hypothalamic landmark structures. After surgery, most patients can resume their normal activities even after aggressive tumor removal, although patients require postoperative hormonal replacement.
