Serum eosinophilic cationic protein is correlated with food impaction and endoscopic severity in eosinophilic esophagitis.
The aim of the present study was to analyze the diagnostic accuracy of serum eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and the correlation of ECP with clinical, histopathological, laboratory, and endoscopic features of EoE. ⋯ Serum ECP is an accurate non-invasive biomarker for EoE with high specificity and sensitivity. In addition, ECP is strongly correlated with EREFS and the symptom of food impaction.

Randomized Controlled TrialEvaluation of pain and patient satisfaction by music therapy in patients with endoscopy/colonoscopy.
Endoscopy and colonoscopy are frequently performed procedures to evaluate the gastrointestinal system. These procedures are sometimes disturbing and painful for the patient. In gastrointestinal suits, endoscopy and colonoscopy may be performed on awake or sedated patients. Music therapy is a common and non-pharmacological treatment for various medical conditions, pain, and anxiety. The aim of the present study was to add music therapy to sedation administered during endoscopy and colonoscopy. The effect of music treatment on drug consumption, anxiety, and pain was investigated. ⋯ The present study may serve as the beginning of using music therapy for pain treatment in gastroenterology procedures in our hospital with/without sedation. Music and other non-pharmacological treatment methods must be remembered to increase patient comfort during enco/colonoscopies and other painful procedures.

Pancreatic stump closure using only stapler is associated with high postoperative fistula rate after minimal invasive surgery.
Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality after distal pancreatectomy (DP). The aim of the present study is to determine the risk factors that can lead to POPF. ⋯ LDP is associated with a higher risk of POPF when stump closure is performed with only staplers. Intraoperative blood transfusion is another risk factor for POPF. On the other hand, oversewing sutures to the stapler line reduces the risk of POPF.

ReviewDoes the treatment of proton pump inhibitors reduce dysplasia or adenocarcinoma development in Barrett's esophagus?
Besides reducing the reflux symptoms, the benefit of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) in the treatment of Barrett's esophagus (BE) is not exactly known. The data in the literature show that although the PPI treatment does not reduce the Barrett's segment length, it can reduce dysplasia or the development of early-stage adenocarcinoma (odds ratio (OR): 0.46). Therefore, treatments with PPI may be considered in patients with a diagnosis of BE and at a high risk of adenocarcinoma, even though they are not symptomatic.

Updating predictors of endoscopic recurrence after ileocolic resection for Crohn disease.
Identifying predictors of endoscopic recurrence (ER) has become very important to guide the decision of postoperative strategy. This study aimed to determine the rate of endoscopic recurrence until 12 months after ileocolic resection for Crohn disease (CD) in a cohort and identify its possible predictors. ⋯ Endoscopic recurrence affects almost two-thirds of patients with CD after ileocolic resection, with perianal involvement and a shorter duration of disease being significant risk factors. These factors may indicate a more aggressive disease associated with rapid progression and support the need of intensive early treatment to improve patients' outcomes.
