Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial[Comparison of changes in plasma concentrations of ACTH and beta-endorphin in cholecystectomy under general anesthesia and general plus epidural anesthesia].
To study neuroendocrine response during cholecystectomy under general anesthesia with fentanyl and under general anesthesia with nitrous oxide plus thoracic epidural block, by determining plasma levels of ACTH and beta-endorphin. ⋯ General anesthesia with fentanyl at the dose used in this study was more effective that combined anesthesia in mitigating the release of ACTH and beta-endorphin during cholecystectomy.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial[Efficacy of the EMLA cream in the reduction of pain caused by venipuncture in children premedicated with oral midazolam].
EMLA cream, a lidocaine-prilocaine mixture, penetrates skin easily. Our aim was to compare EMLA and placebo to assess the efficacy of EMLA in decreasing the pain of venipuncture in children premedicated with oral midazolam 0.5 mg/kg. ⋯ EMLA cream decreases the pain of hand venipuncture in children premedicated with oral midazolam.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial[Effect of controlled hypotension using sodium nitroprusside on platelet aggregation].
To determine the influence of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on platelet aggregation when this agent is used to induce hypotension during surgery. ⋯ Platelet aggregation increases during surgery and in the immediate postoperative period. This increase is attenuated when SPA is given to induce hypotension. SPA should be determined by measurement of impedance in whole blood when the nature of platelet aggregation during surgery is being studied, given that early increases in IPA can be masked as a result of the low sensitivity of turbidimetry.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial[Comparative study of clonidine and lidocaine on the attenuation of the intraocular pressure increase associated with laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation].
To verify and compare the efficacy of clonidine and lidocaine for attenuating the ocular hypertensive response generated by manipulation of the laryngoscope and endotracheal intubation (EIT). ⋯ Pretreatment with oral clonidine is an effective method for preventing increases in IOP after EIT, is more effective than pretreatment with lidocaine, and should therefore be used for that end. Intravenous lidocaine represents a valid alternative in emergency cases when the approximate wait time of 2 hours is contraindicated.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial[Postoperative analgesia in herniated disk surgery. Comparative study of diclofenac , lysine acetylsalicylate, and ketorolac].
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effective in treating musculoskeletal pain and are theoretically ideal for treating postoperative pain of the lumbar column. ⋯ The NSAIDs studied were inadequately for treating pain after surgery for lumbar disc hernia. Ketorolac was no better than the other analgesics studied but was associated with a higher number of mild side effects.
