Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study[Blind tracheal intubation through two supraglottic devices: i-gel versus Fastrach intubating laryngeal mask airway (ILMA)].
The use of supraglottic devices as a means of rescue in patients difficult to intubate or ventilate has increased in the field of anaesthetics and in emergency medicine. This study is designed to evaluate the success rate of blind intubations using two supraglottic devices, the Fastrach ILMA and the i-gel mask. ⋯ Both devices were equally effective in achieving adequate ventilation; however, the Fastrach ILMA enabled a higher number of intubations to be made than i-gel and with a lower incidence of post-operative dysphonia.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study[Rocuronium vs vecuronium for neuromuscular block during transsternal thymectomy in the patient with myasthenia gravis].
Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease marked by high titers of immunoglobulin G antibodies, which accelerate destruction of cholinergic receptors and interfere with neuromuscular transmission. This study aimed to determine whether neuromuscular function under a rocuronium block is different from function under a vecuronium block patients with myasthenia gravis and to describe extubation conditions in the operating room or the intensive care unit. ⋯ The rocuronium block had a better profile than the vecuronium block in this study. With this blocking agent we were able to circumvent respiratory depression, with its immediate consequences, and thus meet the main clinical criterion when anesthetizing patients with myasthenia gravis.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study[Efficacy of the fascia iliaca compartment block vs continuous epidural infusion for analgesia following total knee replacement surgery].
Total knee replacement causes moderate to severe postoperative pain. The aim of this trial was to compare postoperative analgesia from a fascia iliaca compartment block to continuous epidural analgesia following knee arthroplasty. ⋯ The fascia iliaca compartment block and continuous epidural infusion are similarly efficient in providing postoperative analgesia for patients after total knee replacement. The fascia iliaca compartment block is associated with a lower incidence of postoperative hemodynamic complications. Early, safe rehabilitation is facilitated by both analgesic techniques.

Randomized Controlled Trial[Parental presence in the operating room: effect on the quality of anesthetic induction and postoperative agitation in children].
Various nonpharmacologic strategies for reducing anxiety in children and improving cooperation during induction of anesthesia have been investigated. Parental presence during anesthetic induction has been the alternative studied most often, especially in English-speaking populations. Mixed results have been reported, however. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of anesthetic induction and the development of postoperative agitation in Spanish children undergoing ear, nose, or throat surgery with or without parental presence in the operating room. ⋯ Parental presence during induction of inhalation anesthesia improves the induction experience of nonpremeditated Spanish children, increasing the incidence of easy induction and decreasing the presence of traumatic induction. The quality of the postoperative experience is similar.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study[Ephedrine vs. phenylephrine by intravenous bolus and continuous infusion to prevent hypotension secondary to spinal anesthesia during cesarean section: a randomized comparative trial].
Subarachnoid spinal anesthesia for cesarean section is associated with a high incidence of hypotension, which can require the use of vasoconstrictors. The aim of this trial was to compare ephedrine to phenylephrine for the prevention of secondary hypotension and to assess the adverse effects on both mother and newborn. ⋯ At the doses of ephedrine and phenylephrine administered in this trial, the ability of these drugs to prevent hypotension during cesarean section proved to be similar. Higher incidences of adverse events (hypertension and bradycardia) were observed in the phenylephrine group. No differences were observed in neonatal effects.
