Internal fixation vs manual reduction in the treatment of ankle fracture healing and inflammation: A case-control study.
Ankle fractures are among the most common bone injuries, which are often accompanied by soft tissue injuries. Proper management of these fractures is crucial to promote healing and minimize complications. This study explores the effects of 2 treatment methods for ankle fractures: open reduction and internal fixation and manual reduction followed by plaster external fixation. ⋯ It leads to better fracture healing, shorter recovery times, and fewer complications, including nonunion. Manual reduction with external fixation remains a viable option but may be associated with a higher risk of nonunion and delayed healing. Early and effective management of soft tissue injuries is crucial for improving treatment outcomes in ankle fractures.

Comparative StudyMobility and living status at discharge and after three-months for extramedullary versus intramedullary fixation of AO type 31-A1 trochanteric fractures; an analysis of Dutch hip fracture audit data.
The use of intramedullary fixation of AO type 31-A1 fractures is rising, despite evidence of non-superiority when compared with extramedullary fixation. The aim of this study was to evaluate mobility and living status for extramedullary fixation (EMF) versus intramedullary fixation (IMF) in Dutch hospitals during the initial hospital stay and until three-months after trauma. ⋯ This study showed no meaningful differences between EMF and IMF of type 31-A1 trochanteric fractures during hospital stay and until three-month follow-up. Despite little differences in outcome and EMF being the treatment option of first choice by the Dutch Hip fracture guideline, IMF is used in the vast majority of patients.

Outcomes of internal rib fixation through complete video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for multiple rib fractures and flail chest in severe chest trauma.
Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) is a standard treatment for multiple rib fractures and flail chest. The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of internal rib fixation through complete video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for multiple rib fractures and flail chest in patients with severe chest trauma. ⋯ Internal rib fixation through complete VATS is a feasible and safe approach for treating multiple rib fractures and flail chest in patients with severe chest trauma.

Comparative StudyFracture characteristics and functional outcomes for Schatzker V/VI bicondylar tibial plateau fractures with a separate tubercle fragment: a comparative study.
A separate tibial tubercle fragment (TF) is found in up to half of all bicondylar tibial plateau (BTP) fractures. Adequate healing of the TF is required to reconstitute the extensor mechanism of the knee. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes after surgical fixation of BTP fractures with and without a TF. ⋯ In this comparative study, the presence of a TF did not portend a worse functional outcome for patients with a healed fracture. Rates of open fracture and high energy mechanism of injury were significantly higher in the TF group.. Surgeons should be aware that a separate TF may indicate a more severe injury. More studies are needed to determine whether the presence of a TF is associated with higher complication rates.

Meta-Analysis. ⋯ Among patients with thoracolumbar fractures, treatment with MIS was associated with decreased EBL, shorter LOS, earlier pain reduction, and less regional kyphosis compared to treatment with open fixation. Additionally, higher radiation-exposure was seen among patients treated with MIS. While MIS offers several potential benefits, both MIS and open fixation remain safe and reliable options for the treatment of thoracolumbar fractures.
