To determine if Robust Sensor Fusion (RSF), a method designed to fuse data from multiple sensors with redundant heart rate information can be used to improve the quality of heart rate data. To determine if the improved estimate of heart rate can reduce the number of false and missed heart rate alarms. ⋯ Redundancy in sensor measurements can be used to improve HR estimation in the clinical setting. Methods like RSF which improve the quality of monitored data and reduce nuisance alarms will enhance the value of patient monitors to clinicians.

Comparative Study Clinical TrialNoninvasive assessment of cardiac output in critically ill patients by analysis of the finger blood pressure waveform.
To assess whether the measurement of cardiac output by computer-assisted analysis of the finger blood pressure waveform can substitute for the thermodilution method in critically ill patients. ⋯ Computer-assisted analysis of finger blood pressure waveform to assess cardiac output is not a substitute for the thermodilution method due to a high percentage (23.2%) of inaccurate readings; however, it may be a useful tool for the detection of relative hemodynamic trends in critically ill patients.

Hemodynamic monitoring: a comparison of research and practice.
Measurement of hemodynamic parameters is a common practice and is well researched, but little information is available on the translation of the research into actual practice. ⋯ Research findings are generally being implemented at the bedside, although not completely or consistently. Minimizing the barriers to use of research is within the scope of nurses' practice.

We studied the effects of hypothermia and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) on four depth of anaesthesia monitors; spectral edge frequency (SEF), median frequency (MF), bispectral index (BIS) and auditory evoked potential index (AEPIndex) in 12 patients during uneventful cardiac anaesthesia. Each variable was recorded simultaneously at 10 periods during anaesthesia. All four variables were not affected by the transition to CPB. ⋯ The variability decreased during rewarming. The values of AEPIndex throughout the anaesthesia never overlapped with those before induction of anaesthesia. The AEPIndex was the most stable and reliable as a depth of anaesthesia monitor among the four variables in cardiac bypass surgery.

Continuous electromyographic monitoring to detect nerve root injury during thoracolumbar scoliosis surgery.
The results of intraoperative monitoring during a case of nerve root injury sustained from scoliosis surgery to the thoracolumbar spine are described. ⋯ The authors of this study recommend electromyographic monitoring of appropriate lumbosacral myotomes in addition to somatosensory-evoked potentials during this type of procedure.
