Characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes associated with readmission in COVID-19 patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
We aimed to determine the characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes associated with readmission in COVID-19 patients. ⋯ Male sex, white race, comorbidities, and older age were associated with a higher risk of readmission among previously admitted COVID-19 patients. These factors can help clinicians and policy-makers predict, and conceivably reduce the risk of readmission in COVID-19 patients.

Efficacy of topical tranexamic acid in epistaxis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Epistaxis is a very common presentation in the emergency department (ED), accounting for approximately 1 in 200 ED visits in the United States. Currently, standard practice includes the initial use of topical anesthetics and vasoconstrictors, followed by more invasive treatments such as nasal packing, cauterization or surgical ligation for refractory cases. Over the years several studies have investigated the potential use of topical Tranexamic Acid (TXA) in the management of epistaxis. We have conducted a meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of topical TXA versus other standard practices or placebo in the management of epistaxis. ⋯ Topical TXA is associated with better bleeding cessation rates after treatment compared to the standard practices.

Improving outcomes for older people in the emergency department: a review of reviews.
There has been a recognised trend of increasing use of emergency and urgent care and emergency departments (EDs) by older people, which is marked by a substantial evidence base reporting interventions for this population and guidance from key organisations. Despite this, outcomes for this population remain suboptimal. A plethora of reviews in this area provides challenges for clinicians and commissioners in determining which interventions and models of care best meet people's needs. The aim of this review was to identify effective ED interventions which have been reported for older people, and to provide a clear summary of the myriad reviews and numerous intervention types in this area. ⋯ PROSPERO CRD42018111461.

Fascia iliaca block for hip fractures in the emergency department: meta-analysis with trial sequential analysis.
Fascia iliaca block (FICB) has been used to reduce pain and its impact on geriatric patients with hip fractures. ⋯ FICB is associated with significant pain relief both at rest and on movement lasting up to 4 h as well as a reduction in opioid requirement and associated nausea and vomiting in geriatric patients with hip fracture. However, the quality of evidence is low and additional trials are necessary.

Syncope Time Frames for Adverse Events after Emergency Department Presentation: An Individual Patient Data Meta-Analysis.
Background and Objectives: Knowledge of the incidence and time frames of the adverse events of patients presenting syncope at the ED is essential for developing effective management strategies. The aim of the present study was to perform a meta-analysis of the incidence and time frames of adverse events of syncope patients. Materials and Methods: We combined individual patients' data from prospective observational studies including adult patients who presented syncope at the ED. ⋯ Conclusions: The risk of death or life-threatening adverse event is rare in patients presenting syncope at the ED. The most common adverse events are brady and supraventricular arrhythmias, which occur during the first 3 days. Prolonged ECG monitoring in the ED in a short stay unit with ECG monitoring facilities may, therefore, be beneficial.
