Alcohol consumption can cause, beyond addiction, roughly 200 different diseases and at least fourteen types of cancer. In 2016 the WHO estimated that 29% of alcohol-related deaths were mainly due to oncological diseases, liver cirrhosis (20%), and cardiovascular disorders (19%). The aim of this review was to focus on the absorption and metabolism of ethanol and discuss the main conditions caused by alcohol consumption (i.e., liver and cardiovascular diseases, and tumors). ⋯ Even moderate drinking appears not to reduce mortality risk. Alcohol intake is one of the main risk factors for several pathological conditions and social problems, thus drastically impacting on public health. Proper awareness of the high risk related to alcohol consumption is of crucial importance to reduce the harm to public health.

Letter Observational StudyMulti-organ abnormalities assessed by a single MRI scan in individuals with blood cancer.
During the COVID-19 pandemic individuals with all blood cancers were classified as clinically vulnerable and at high risk of complications and death. Our study sought to determine if individuals with specific blood cancers were at a heightened risk of longer term organ impairment, secondary to SARS-CoV-2 infection. ⋯ A multi-organ MRI platform offers the capacity to accurately evaluate organ health dynamically in blood cancers and detect asymptomatic organ impairment. The application of multi-organ MRI could aid early detection and longitudinal monitoring of organ impairment, potentially guiding more personalised treatment strategies and improving clinical outcomes in many rare diseases.

To quantify the burden of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and related metabolic disorders in premenopausal women. ⋯ The escalating impact of metabolic syndrome, the rising trends in death rates linked to obesity, and the disparities based on region and socioeconomic status in premenopausal women underscore the alarming increase in the global burden of metabolic syndrome.

Prion diseases are rare, incurable, and rapidly progressive. Pathogenic misfolded proteins accumulate in the central nervous system causing fatal neurodegeneration. Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is an even rarer, hereditary subset of prion disease. ⋯ His clinical course progressed rapidly, and death occurred several months after the initial hospital presentation. We discuss the pathophysiology and diagnosis of FFI and the emotional care required to treat this fatal disease. General practitioners should be aware of this rare diagnosis to improve patient management.
