Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation modulates trigeminal but not somatosensory perception: functional evidence for a trigemino-vagal system in humans.
Noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) is effective in several types of headache disorders. We sought to unravel the mechanism of how nVNS exhibits this efficacy. This study used a randomized, single-blind, sham-controlled, crossover design and comprised 3 projects with 3 independent cohorts of healthy participants. ⋯ Heart rate variability parameters did not change after nVNS. Our results provide functional evidence of a long hypothesized functional trigemino-vagal system in humans and may explain why nVNS is effective in some headache disorders but not in somatic pain disorders. Because unilateral nVNS modulated the trigeminal thresholds bilaterally, this effect is probably indirect through a central top-down mechanism.

Effectiveness of a physical activity intervention on the overweight and obesity of Chilean schoolchildren.
Physical fitness is considered a measure that integrates most of the functions of the human organism that are involved in physical activity. Motor competence is important due to its observed implications in the physical, mental and social development of children and adolescents. These assessments require the existence of updated reference values that allow the categorization of individuals and groups according to levels of physical fitness and motor competence. This paper describes the study protocol to Effectiveness of a Physical Activity Intervention on the Overweight and Obesity of Chilean Schoolchildren, and in this way determine, through the calculation of a representative sample, reference values for physical fitness and motor competence in children aged 4 to 6 years in the region of La Araucanía, Chile. ⋯ the lack of reference values for physical condition and motor competence for children between 6 and 4 years of age in the Araucanía region highlights the need to establish values, which will contribute to improving the health of children of the age group to be worked on.

Trial of Anti-BDCA2 Antibody Litifilimab for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
Antibody-binding of blood dendritic cell antigen 2 (BDCA2), which is expressed exclusively on plasmacytoid dendritic cells, suppresses the production of type I interferon that is involved in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The safety and efficacy of subcutaneous litifilimab, a humanized monoclonal antibody that binds to BDCA2, in patients with SLE have not been extensively studied. ⋯ In a phase 2 trial involving participants with SLE, litifilimab was associated with a greater reduction from baseline in the number of swollen and tender joints than placebo over a period of 24 weeks. Longer and larger trials are required to determine the safety and efficacy of litifilimab for the treatment of SLE. (Funded by Biogen; LILAC ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT02847598.).

The effect of electromagnetic field on sleep of patients with nocturia.
Accumulated studies revealed that electromagnetic field can affect human brain and sleep. We explored the effectiveness of electromagnetic field [Schumann resonance (SR)] on nocturia symptoms, quality of life, and sleep in patients with nocturia. ⋯ Our study revealed that electromagnetic field (SR) as an add-on can improve not only sleep and quality of life but also nocturia symptoms in patients with nocturia. These findings suggest that SR can be effective for sleep disturbance secondary to physical disease, which can be a new application of the electromagnetic field.

Randomized Controlled TrialKinetics of 5% and 20% albumin: a controlled crossover trial in volunteers.
Albumin for intravenous infusion is marketed in two concentrations, 20% and 5%, but how they compare with regard to plasma volume expansion over time is unclear. ⋯ The most important difference between the fluids was a dehydrating effect of 20% albumin when the same albumin mass was administered.
