Prevalence of bleeding symptoms among young adults in Saudi Arabia, a national survey.
Prevalence of bleeding disorders vary due to several factors including geographical location. Mild bleeding disorders can lead to iron deficiency, morbidity, and in severe cases mortality. Quantification of haemorrhagic symptoms is a key component in management of bleeding disorders and a challenging task for clinicians. ⋯ Epistaxis prevalence was significantly higher in males 30.7% vs 23.2% in females (P-value .0004), while cutaneous symptoms were reported significantly more by female participants 29.7% vs 12.3% in males (P-value < .001). Menorrhagia was reported by 28% of females, with heavy bleeding experienced by 57.6% female participants for <7 days while in 42.4% of females for >7 days. The current study signifies the ethnic distribution and gender disparity of mild bleeding disorders, and highlights the need for national surveillance system in order to improve management of patients with bleeding disorders.

Malignant transformation of oral potentially malignant disorders in Taiwan: An observational nationwide population database study.
Oral cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death, which are mostly preceded by oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Taiwanese government launched a free oral cancer screening program. The aim of this study was to analyze the malignant transformation rate of OPMDs. ⋯ Nationwide screening is very important for early diagnosis. OVH had the highest malignant transformation possibility. Female OPMD patients are a rare but have a relatively high malignant transformation rate.

Multicenter StudyResults of low-dose computed tomography as a regular health examination among Chinese hospital employees.
Lung cancer is traditionally more prevalent in the elderly patients, men, and smokers. However, as low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is increasingly popular, we hypothesized the disease spectrum might change. ⋯ LDCT detected lung cancer in a significant proportion of young, female, and nonsmoking employees. The vast majority of these lung cancers were early stage, with extremely good prognosis.

Effectiveness of direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C virus infection in hepatitis C/HIV coinfected individuals: A multicenter study.
In a hepatitis C virus (HCV)/HIV-positive Brazilian cohort, evaluate the safety and efficacy of HCV DAAs, the frequency of resistance substitutions in the HCV NS5A and NS5B genes and identify predictors of treatment failure. Retrospective multicenter study of HCV/HIV patients treated with sofosbuvir (SOF)-based regimens at 10 reference centers in Brazil. Clinical and virological data were collected. ⋯ By multivariate analysis, therapeutic failure was associated, in the m-ITT analysis, with concomitant use of anticonvulsant drugs (P = .001), age (P = .04), and female gender (P = .04). SOF/DCV regimens were associated with a high SVR rate in an HCV/HIV population. The use of concurrent anticonvulsant drugs and DAAs decreases the chances of achieving an SVR.

Does the CHA2DS2-VASc scale sufficiently predict the risk of left atrial appendage thrombus in patients with diagnosed atrial fibrillation treated with non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants?
The CHA2DS2-VASc scale does not include potential risk factors for left atrial appendage thrombus (LAAT) formation such as a form of atrial fibrillation (AF) and impaired kidney function. The real risk of thromboembolic complications in AF patients is still unclear as well as an optimal anticoagulant treatment in males with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 1 and females with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 2. The aim of this study was to compare the predictive value of the CHA2DS2-VASc scale and other scales to estimate the risk of LAAT formation in AF patients treated with non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) and to assess the prevalence of thrombi in patients at intermediate risk of stroke. ⋯ The receiver operating characteristics revealed that the CHA2DS2-VASc-RAF scale had better predictive ability to distinguish between patients with and without LAAT in the study group than CHA2DS2-VASc (P = .0006), CHADS2 (P = .0006) and R2CHADS2 scale (P = .0140). The CHA2DS2-VASc scale should be supplemented with an assessment of renal function and form of AF to improve stroke risk estimation. The application of additional scales to estimate the risk of LAAT might be especially useful among males with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 1 and females with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 2.
