Primary osteoporosis is characterized by decreasing bone mass and density and reduced bone strength that leads to a higher risk for fracture, especially hip and spine fractures. The prevalence of osteoporosis in the United States is estimated at 12.6% for adults older than 50 years. Although it is most frequently diagnosed in White and Asian females, it still affects males and females of all ethnicities. ⋯ The purpose of this paper is to present a review of current performance measures on osteoporosis and inform physicians, payers, and policymakers in their selection of performance measures for this condition. The Performance Measurement Committee identified 6 osteoporosis performance measures relevant to internal medicine physicians, only 1 of which was found valid at all levels of attribution. This paper also proposes a performance measure concept to address a performance gap for the initial approach to therapy for patients with a new diagnosis of osteoporosis based on the current American College of Physicians guideline.

Meta Analysis
The impact of Pilates exercise for depression symptoms in female patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
The Pilates exercise has recently become an increasingly popular way of exercise in female patients since it is an attractive and low-cost physical exercise modality. Pilates may be a beneficial method of exercise for female patients with depression and anxiety symptoms. However, to date, there has been no attempt to collate this literature. This review aims to systematically assess and meta-analyze the efficacy of Pilates exercise for female patients with depression and anxiety symptoms and inform evidence-based guidelines for exercise prescription. ⋯ Pilates exercise could reduce levels of depression and anxiety in female patients with depression and anxiety symptoms. Pilates exercise can be used as a potential ancillary program to improve depression and anxiety symptoms for female patients.

Whole blood transfusion is associated with benefits including improved survival, coagulopathy, and decreased transfusion requirements. The majority of whole blood transfusion is in the form of low-titer O-positive whole blood (LTOWB). Practice at many trauma centers withholds the use of LTOWB in women of childbearing potential due to concerns of alloimmunization. The purpose of this article is to review the evidence for LTOWB transfusion in female trauma patients and generate guidelines for its application. ⋯ The use of whole blood resuscitation in trauma is associated with benefits in the resuscitation of severely injured patients. The rate at which severely injured, Rh-negative patients develop anti-D antibodies is low. Treatments for alloimmunized pregnancies have advanced, with excellent results. Fears of alloimmunization in female patients are likely overstated and may not warrant the withholding of whole blood resuscitation. The benefits of whole blood resuscitation likely outweigh the risks of alloimmunization.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Oral gepotidacin versus nitrofurantoin in patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infection (EAGLE-2 and EAGLE-3): two randomised, controlled, double-blind, double-dummy, phase 3, non-inferiority trials.
Gepotidacin is a novel, bactericidal, first-in-class triazaacenaphthylene antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA replication by a distinct mechanism of action and a unique binding site, providing well balanced inhibition of two type II topoisomerase enzymes. Oral gepotidacin is under investigation to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of oral gepotidacin with that of nitrofurantoin in adolescent and adult female individuals with uncomplicated urinary tract infections. ⋯ GSK and the US Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.
