Is botulinum toxin A effective for the treatment of plantar fasciitis?
Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) is used as an alternative treatment for chronic orthopedic conditions. This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy and safety of BoNT-A on pain and functional outcome in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis. ⋯ There is a need for larger, prospective, long-term, placebo-controlled studies to fully establish the role of BoNT-A for the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

Effect of gentle cutaneous stimulation on heat-induced autonomic response and subjective pain intensity in healthy humans.
The present study examined whether touch influences the autonomic responses and subjective pain intensity induced by noxious heat stimulation in humans. Heart rate and digital pulse wave were recorded. Heat stimulation was applied to the right plantar foot before, during, and after touch. ⋯ In contrast, touch with a flat disc was ineffective for any measurement. Participants hardly perceived a difference in the texture of the touching materials. The present study result suggests there are mechanisms in conscious humans where some sort of touch inhibits nociceptive transmission into autonomic reflex pathways independent of sensation and cognition.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of cold pressor pain on the abuse liability of intranasal oxycodone in male and female prescription opioid abusers.
Approximately 1.9 million persons in the U.S. have prescription opioid use disorders often with concomitant bodily pain, but systematic data on the impact of pain on abuse liability of opioids is lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether pain alters the intranasal abuse liability of oxycodone, a commonly prescribed and abused analgesic, in males and females. ⋯ The CPT was a reliably painful and stressful stimulus that did not diminish the abuse liability of intranasal oxycodone. Females were more sensitive to oxycodone on several abuse liability measures that warrant further follow-up. Snorting oxycodone rapidly produced psychoactive effects indicative of substantial abuse liability.

Feasibility of using short message service to collect pain outcomes in a low back pain clinical trial.
Observational study nested within a randomized controlled trial. ⋯ SMS supplemented with phone interviews, but not SMS alone, is a feasible option to collect simple data within a back pain clinical trial setting.

Randomized Controlled TrialDetecting the emergence of chronic pain in sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited hematological disease marked by intense pain. Early in life the pain is episodic, but it becomes increasingly chronic in many cases. Little is known about this emergence of a chronic pain state. ⋯ Most SCD patients whose pain remits entirely between episodes are not in a chronic pain state, but some--those who are older and have a history of highly painful episodes--appear to be transitioning into it. These early signs of disturbed processing may aid clinicians seeking to forestall disease progression.
