Multicenter Study Pragmatic Clinical TrialLong-term naturalistic follow-up of chronic pain in adults with prescription opioid use disorder.
Chronic pain is common in patients with prescription opioid use disorder (OUD), and pain severity has been shown to predict opioid use for those with chronic pain. However, recent research suggests that focusing on pain status (i.e., the presence or absence of chronic pain) at treatment initiation may not reflect the clinical significance of pain over the long-term course of OUD. Reports of variability in chronic pain and its clinical significance over time have yet to be investigated in patients with prescription OUD. The present study examined variability in chronic pain status from entry into prescription OUD treatment through 3.5-year follow-up. Additionally, we examined the association between concurrent chronic pain and opioid use at three follow-up time points. ⋯ Chronic pain status may vary over time in those with prescription OUD, and chronic pain appears to be associated with concurrent opioid use. The present findings highlight the importance of assessing chronic pain throughout the course of prescription OUD.

The Pain Catastrophizing Scale-short form: psychometric properties and threshold for identifying high-risk individuals.
The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) measures three aspects of catastrophic cognitions about pain-rumination, magnification, and helplessness. To facilitate assessment and clinical application, we aimed to (a) develop a short version on the basis of its factorial structure and the items' correlations with key pain-related outcomes, and (b) identify the threshold on the short form indicative of risk for depression. ⋯ The short-PCS may be used in lieu of the full scale and as a brief screen to identify individuals with serious catastrophizing.

The relationship between the severity of pain and stone size, hydronephrosis and laboratory parameters in renal colic attack.
In this study, we investigated the relationship between the severity of pain level and hydronephrosis, hematuria and pyuria presence in the acute renal colic attack and whether there was a correlation between the stone size and inflammatory markers. ⋯ We detected that the pain level was not correlated with the stone size and big stones were not statistically riskier in the hydronephrosis development. However, we think that the risk of complications such as hydronephrosis is higher in the patients whose pain level are higher and the infection may be accompanied by this group.

The Reality of Pain Scoring in the Emergency Department: Findings From a Multiple Case Study Design.
Documentation of pain severity with pain scores is recommended within emergency departments (EDs) to improve consistency of assessment and management of pain. Pain scores are used in treatment guidelines and triage algorithms to determine pain management and in audit and research to evaluate pain management practices. Despite significant debate of their benefits, there has been limited evaluation of their use in practice. We use naturalistic, qualitative methods to understand how pain scores are used in practice and the mechanisms by which pain scoring may influence pain management. ⋯ In practice, pain scoring may not accurately reflect patient experience. Using pain scoring to determine the appropriateness of triage and treatment decisions reduces its validity as a measure of patient experience. Pain scoring should not be central to audit and systems of accountability for pain management.
