Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Pre-oxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen vs. tight facemask during rapid sequence induction.
Pre-oxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen can decrease the risk of desaturation during rapid sequence induction in patients undergoing emergency surgery. Previous studies were single-centre and often in limited settings. This randomised, international, multicentre trial compared high-flow nasal oxygen with standard facemask pre-oxygenation for rapid sequence induction in emergency surgery at all hours of the day and night. ⋯ The risk of desaturation was not increased during on-call hours. No difference was seen in end-tidal carbon dioxide levels in the first breath after tracheal intubation or in the number of patients with signs of regurgitation between groups. These results confirm that high-flow nasal oxygen maintains adequate oxygen levels during pre-oxygenation for rapid sequence induction.

Use of high-flow nasal cannula and noninvasive ventilation in patients with COVID-19: A multicenter observational study.
The use of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in patients with COVID-19 is debated. ⋯ In critically ill patients with COVID-19 who used HFNC and NIV as first-line therapy, the duration of HFNC + NIV, intubation rate and mortality did not differ between two groups. And no medical staff got nosocomial infection during this study.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyAssociation of Obstructive Sleep Apnea With Difficult Intubation: Prospective Multicenter Observational Cohort Study.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been found to be associated with difficult airway, although there is a paucity of prospective studies investigating thresholds of OSA severity with difficult airway outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine the association between OSA and difficult intubation or difficult mask ventilation. We also explored the utility of the Snoring, Tiredness, Observed apnea, high blood Pressure, Body mass index, Age, Neck circumference, and Gender (STOP-Bang) score for difficult airway prediction. ⋯ Moderate and severe OSA were associated with difficult intubation, and increasing neck circumference was associated with difficult mask ventilation. A higher STOP-Bang score of 3 or more may be associated with difficult intubation versus STOP-Bang score of 0-2. Anesthesiologists should be vigilant for difficult intubation when managing patients suspected or diagnosed with OSA.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyVenous thrombosis, thromboembolism, biomarkers of inflammation, and coagulation in coronavirus disease 2019.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with abnormal inflammatory and coagulation markers, potentially mediating thrombotic events. Our objective was to investigate the incidence, time course, laboratory features, and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 patients with suspected venous thromboembolism (VTE). ⋯ Male sex, elevated CRP, and elevated platelet count at admission were associated with VTE on univariable analysis. However, only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis. Older age, active malignancy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and elevated D-dimer at admission were independently associated with death for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Difficult tracheal intubation in neonates and infants. NEonate and Children audiT of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE): a prospective European multicentre observational study.
Neonates and infants are susceptible to hypoxaemia in the perioperative period. The aim of this study was to analyse interventions related to anaesthesia tracheal intubations in this European cohort and identify their clinical consequences. ⋯ NCT02350348.
