Meta AnalysisEfficacy and safety of salmeterol/fluticasone compared with montelukast alone (or add-on therapy to fluticasone) in the treatment of bronchial asthma in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Despite the recommendation of inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) plus long-acting beta 2-agonist (LABA) and leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) or ICS/LTRA as stepwise approaches in asthmatic children, there is a lack of published systematic review comparing the efficacy and safety of the two therapies in children and adolescents aged 4 to 18 years. This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of salmeterol/fluticasone (SFC) vs. montelukast (MON), or combination of montelukast and fluticasone (MFC) in children and adolescents aged 4 to 18 years with bronchial asthma. ⋯ CRD42019133156.

The aim of this review was to assess whether the presence of rs9939609 and rs17782313 polymorphisms increase the risk for obesity among children and adolescents. This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist and it was registered in PROSPERO. The search was performed in the PubMed/Medline, The Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases. ⋯ Three studies did not find an association between overweight and obesity in children and adolescents with the presence of rs17782313 or rs9939609. One found a protective effect for obesity in individuals with risk A allele referring to rs9939609, one found a synergistic effect in relation to the presence of polymorphisms rs17782313 and rs9939609 for obese phenotype, and one observed that the presence together of the rs9939609, rs17782313, and rs12970134 MC4R were significant for the presence of obesity in children and adolescents. The results suggest that depending on the population evaluated and ethnicity, the polymorphisms rs17782313 and rs9939609 could be associated with overweight and obesity in children and adolescents.

The medical assessment of affections of the apophyses frequently presents the assessor with problems in causality testing and estimation of functional impairment. Apophyses are the insertion of tendons and are therefore at the center of an acting parallelogram of forces. They fuse via an apophyseal plate in the second decade of life. ⋯ Once the mineralization is complete, this type of fracture no longer occurs. Osgood-Schlatter disease, an insertion tendinosis of the patellar tendon, occurs in around 20% of all sport-active adolescents but it is questionable whether it can be associated with the acute avulsion fracture. Knowledge of the pathogenesis of affections and injuries of the apophysis can provide the assessor with good foundations for the estimation of a causal association.

Systematic review of risk and protective factors for suicidal and self-harm behaviors among children and adolescents involved with cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is associated with increased risk of suicidal and self-harm behaviors in children and adolescents. However, no review to date has explored factors that exacerbate and mitigate this relationship. This systematic review concerns research on factors that influence the impact of cyberbullying on suicidal and self-harm behaviors. ⋯ School connectedness, restrictive style of parenting, parental support, life satisfaction, having a healthy diet, personal skills and having family dinners were associated with less risk of suicidal and self-harm behaviors following cyberbullying. These protective factors suggest prevention strategies to reduce the impacts of cyberbullying by teaching better personal skills, promoting school social connections and proposing family interventions. More research is needed including exploration of the differential impacts of different forms of cyberbullying, and evaluations of the impacts of programs to increase personal skills, improve family relationships and foster school connectedness to reducing suicidal and self-harm behaviors in this vulnerable population.

ReviewMidlatency Auditory Evoked Potentials during Anesthesia in Children: a Narrative Review.
The brain is considered as the major target organ of anesthetic agents. Despite that, a reliable means to monitor its function during anesthesia is lacking. Mid latency auditory evoked potentials are known to be sensitive to anesthetic agents and might therefore be a measure of hypnotic state in pediatric patients. This review investigates the available literature describing various aspects of mid latency auditory evoked potential monitoring in pediatric anesthesia.
