Blood urea nitrogen and clinical prognosis in patients with COVID-19: A retrospective study.
The aim of this study was to estimate the association between blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and clinical prognosis in patients with COVID-19. A multicenter, retrospective study was conducted in adult patients with COVID-19 in 3 hospitals in Zhenjiang from January 2023 to May 2023. Patients were divided into survival and death group based on whether they survived at day 28. ⋯ When the cutoff value of BUN was 7.37 mmol/L, the sensitivity and specificity were 84.62% and 70.31%. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that hyper-BUN (≥7.37 mmol/L) was associated with increased 28-day mortality among COVID-19 patients. Patients with COVID-19 who died within 28 days had a higher level of BUN, and hyper-BUN (≥7.37 mmol/L) was associated with increased 28-day mortality.

Effectiveness of Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines in Preventing SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Children and Adolescents Aged 5 to 17 Years.
Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were recommended in the US for children and adolescents aged 12 years or older on September 1, 2022, and for children aged 5 to 11 years on October 12, 2022; however, data demonstrating the effectiveness of bivalent COVID-19 vaccines are limited. ⋯ The bivalent COVID-19 vaccines protected children and adolescents against SARS-CoV-2 infection and symptomatic COVID-19. These data demonstrate the benefit of COVID-19 vaccine in children and adolescents. All eligible children and adolescents should remain up to date with recommended COVID-19 vaccinations.

Multicenter StudySuicide and Self-Harm in Adolescents During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A U.S. Virtual Pediatric Systems, LLC, Database Study of PICU Admissions, 2016-2021.
To characterize the epidemiology of suicide and self-harm among adolescents admitted to PICUs during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. ⋯ The number of suicide deaths and PICU admissions per quarter for self-harm remained relatively constant during the pandemic, while the number of all-cause PICU admissions per quarter decreased compared with the pre-pandemic period. The resultant higher ratio of self-harm admissions to all-cause PICU admissions may have contributed to the perception that more adolescents required critical care for mental health-related conditions early in the pandemic.

Quantifying hospital environmental ventilation using carbon dioxide monitoring - a multicentre study.
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of environmental ventilation in reducing airborne pathogen transmission. Carbon dioxide monitoring is recommended in the community to ensure adequate ventilation. Dynamic measurements of ventilation quantifying human exhaled waste gas accumulation are not conducted routinely in hospitals. ⋯ We conclude that staff break, office and clinical areas on acute medical and respiratory wards frequently had inadequate ventilation, potentially increasing the risks of airborne pathogen transmission to staff and patients. Conversely, ventilation was consistently high in the ICU and operating theatre clinical environments. Carbon dioxide monitoring could be used to measure and guide improvements in hospital ventilation.

Real-world comparison between mechanical and manual cardiopulmonary resuscitation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, including an increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA). Healthcare providers are now required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Additionally, mechanical CPR devices have been introduced to reduce the number of personnel required for resuscitation. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of CPR performed with a mechanical device and the outcomes of manual CPR performed by personnel wearing PPE. ⋯ This study found no significant differences in survival rates and neurological outcomes between mechanical CPR and PPE-equipped manual CPR in the ED setting. However, a longer total CPR duration was observed in the mechanical CPR group. Further research is required to explore the impact of PPE on healthcare providers' performance and fatigue during CPR in the context of the pandemic and beyond.
