Experimental study. ⋯ The EOS rabbit model demonstrated reduced lung volume, impaired alveolarization, septal thickening, and vascular changes, indicating scoliosis's negative impact on thoracic and lung development, especially on the concave lung.

The organ-level molecular response to cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) remains inadequately understood and may be heterogeneous. Here, we measured organ-specific gene expression in a piglet model of CPB with deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA). Infant piglets underwent peripheral CPB with 75 min of DHCA and 6 h of critical care after separation from CPB. ⋯ Key upregulated systems included ribosomal proliferation and mitochondrial assembly in the liver, oxidative stress response and proximal tubular repair in the kidney, myofilament structural genes and pro-hypertrophy pathways in the heart, and solute channels and arginine metabolism in the lung. Downregulation of adaptive immunity genes occurred in multiple organs. Transcriptomics could inform the investigation of targeted therapies and adverse event screening after cardiac surgery.

Cannabidiol protects lung against inflammation and apoptosis in a rat model of blunt chest trauma via Bax/Bcl-2/Cas-9 signaling pathway.
This study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that cannabidiol (CBD), with known anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects, would reduce the severity of acute lung injury in pulmonary contusion following blunt chest trauma. ⋯ CBD reduces lung damage in lung contusions caused by blunt chest trauma through its anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects. More detailed studies investigating other important intracellular pathways are needed.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease affects more than 65 million people worldwide. Lung transplantation is the only definitive treatment. However, donor availability is limited in meeting the demand. ⋯ The lung's ability to regenerate extensively after injury suggests that this capability could be promoted in diseases in which loss of lung tissue occurs. Lung bioengineering offers the potential to drastically extend life expectancy in patients with end-stage lung disease. If lung reengineering were successful, it would revolutionize the world of transplantation.

Pragmatic evaluation of point of care lung ultrasound for the triage of COVID-19 patients using a simple scoring matrix: Intraclass-classification and predictive value.
The value of routine bedside lung ultrasound (LUS) for predicting patient disposition during visits to the Emergency Department (ED) is difficult to quantify. We hypothesized that a simplified scoring of bedside-acquired LUS images for the triage of acute respiratory symptoms in the ED would be associated with patient disposition. ⋯ A simplified scoring of bedside-acquired LUS images from patients with acute respiratory symptoms at the emergency department reliably predicts patient disposition.
