Multicenter StudyMatters of the Heart: Examining Motivating Factors and Unconscious Bias in the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship.
The purpose of this study was to identify barriers to improving diversity within adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology (ACTA) and to provide possible strategies that could be implemented by evaluating the demographics of current ACTA fellows, examining motivating factors to pursue the sub-specialty, and assessing perceptions of unconscious biases during their application process and training. ⋯ This study identified several motivators to pursue ACTA and the perceptions of unconscious biases during the fellowship. Female fellows felt unconscious bias and a negative impact against them due to sex. Due to the small number of undergraduate enrollments, the results should be interpreted cautiously. Additionally, this provides support to complete further studies. Implicit bias training is one strategy that can be implemented to decrease unconscious bias experienced by ACTA fellows.

Critical incidents during anesthesia: prospective audit.
Critical incident reporting and analysis is one of the key components of patient safety in anesthesiology. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and characteristics of critical incidents during anesthesia, main causes and factors involved, influence on patient outcomes, prevalence of incident reporting and further analysis. ⋯ NCT05435287, clinicaltrials.gov, 23/6/2022.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Conventional versus video-assisted laryngoscopy for perioperative endotracheal intubation (COVALENT) - a randomized, controlled multicenter trial.
Data on the routine use of video-assisted laryngoscopy in peri-operative intubations are rather inconsistent and ambiguous, in part due to small populations and non-uniform outcome measures in past trials. Failed or prolonged intubation procedures are a reason for relevant morbidity and mortality. This study aims to determine whether video-assisted laryngoscopy (with both Macintosh-shaped and hyperangulated blades) is at least equal to the standard method of direct laryngoscopy with respect to the first-pass success rate. Furthermore, validated tools from the field of human factors will be applied to examine within-team communication and task load during this critical medical procedure. ⋯ This randomized controlled trial will provide a solid base of data in a field where reliable evidence is of major clinical importance. With thousands of endotracheal intubations performed every day in operating rooms around the world, every bit of performance improvement translates into increased patient safety and comfort and may eventually prevent significant burden of disease. Therefore, we feel confident that a large trial has the potential to considerably benefit patients and anaesthetists alike.

Routine Postsurgical Anesthesia Visit to Improve 30-Day Morbidity and Mortality: A Multicenter, Stepped-Wedge Cluster Randomized Interventional Study (the TRACE Study).
To study the impact of a standardized postoperative anesthesia visit on 30-day mortality in medium to high-risk elective surgical patients. ⋯ The combination of MEWS and a postoperative anesthesia visit did not reduce 30-day mortality. Whether a postoperative anesthesia visit with strong adherence to the recommendations provided and in a high-risk population might have a stronger impact on postoperative mortality remains to be determined.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyPain treatment after total hip arthroplasty: Detailed statistical analysis plan for the RECIPE randomised clinical trial.
The RECIPE trial systematically investigates the effects of different combinations of paracetamol, ibuprofen and dexamethasone for pain treatment after total hip arthroplasty. To preserve transparency, minimise risk of bias and to prevent data-driven analysis, we present this detailed statistical analysis plan. ⋯ The RECIPE trial will provide important information on benefit and harm of combinations of the most frequently used non-opioid analgesics for pain after primary hip arthroplasty.
