The postoperative handover: a focus group interview study with nurse anaesthetists, anaesthesiologists and PACU nurses.
To investigate different professionals' (nurse anaesthetists', anaesthesiologists', and postanaesthesia care unit nurses') descriptions of and reflections on the postoperative handover. ⋯ The present findings revealed variations in different professionals' views on the postoperative handover. Healthcare interventions are needed to minimise the gap between professionals' perceptions and practices and to achieve a shared understanding of postoperative handover. Furthermore, to ensure high-quality and safe care, stakeholders/decision makers need to pay attention to the environment and infrastructure in postanaesthesia care.

Multicenter StudyEnhancing Feedback on Professionalism and Communication Skills in Anesthesia Residency Programs.
Despite its importance, training faculty to provide feedback to residents remains challenging. We hypothesized that, overall, at 4 institutions, a faculty development program on providing feedback on professionalism and communication skills would lead to (1) an improvement in the quantity, quality, and utility of feedback and (2) an increase in feedback containing negative/constructive feedback and pertaining to professionalism/communication. As secondary analyses, we explored these outcomes at the individual institutions. ⋯ We detected no overall changes but did detect different changes at each institution despite the identical intervention. The intervention may be more effective with new faculty and/or smaller discussion sessions. Future steps include refining the rating system, exploring ways to sustain changes, and investigating other factors contributing to feedback quality and utility.

Training in intraoperative handover and display of a checklist improve communication during transfer of care: An interventional cohort study of anaesthesia residents and nurse anaesthetists.
Handovers during anaesthesia are common, and failures in communication may lead to morbidity and mortality. ⋯ Intraoperative handover training and display of a checklist in the operating room improved the checklist score for intraoperative transfer of care in anaesthesia.

Predictors of intraoperative testing in adults undergoing noncardiac surgery within a regional hospital system.
The use of intraoperative testing is central to anesthesia practice, and point-of-care testing (POCT) is often used. Nevertheless, POCT is costly and its contribution to patient outcome is unknown. There is a lack of guidelines to describe which patients should undergo intraoperative testing or how results should be applied. As such, we undertook a historical cohort study evaluating intraoperative testing practices within our region where POCT is not used. ⋯ Intraoperative testing is common and more likely in patients undergoing high-risk surgical procedures. In a central laboratory system, there is substantial time from ordering the tests to receiving the results. The clinical impact of this delay is unknown. Further evaluation is required regarding the relationship between the time required for intraoperative test results and perioperative outcomes.

Multicenter StudyAnesthesiologists and Disaster Medicine: A Needs Assessment for Education and Training and Reported Willingness to Respond.
Anesthesiologists provide comprehensive health care across the emergency department, operating room, and intensive care unit. To date, anesthesiologists' perspectives regarding disaster medicine and public health preparedness have not been described. ⋯ Few anesthesiologists reported receiving sufficient education and training in disaster medicine and public health preparedness. Providing education and training and enhancing related employee services may further bolster WTR and help to build a more capable and effective medical workforce for disaster response.
