A meta-analysis. ⋯ In our study, many factors were associated with increased risk of SSI after spinal surgery. We hope this article can provide a reference for spinal surgeons to prevent SSI after spinal surgery.

An Algorithmic Approach to the Reconstruction of Esophageal/Hypopharyngeal Injuries after Anterior Cervical Spinal Fusion.
Anterior cervical disk fusion (ACDF) is a common surgical approach for the treatment of cervical spine pathology. Esophageal perforations, though uncommon, are a devastating complication of this surgery. The objective of this paper is to assess the success of different treatment approaches for the management of esophageal/pharyngeal injury after ACDF. ⋯ Pharyngoesophageal injuries, albeit rare, are a serious and often complex complication after ACDF procedures. We propose a detailed algorithmic approach to guide decision making if faced with this clinical challenge. The huge variability in how these patients are treated emphasizes the potential utility of future multiinstitutional studies.

We sought to assess and compare the rate of adjacent segment degeneration (ASDeg), adjacent segment disease, and related reoperations between patients who underwent lumbar interbody fusion surgery using indirect or direct decompression. ⋯ Indirect decompression showed lower odds of developing ASDeg and undergoing reoperation for ASDeg after lumbar interbody fusion surgery in this meta-analysis. However, the limited number and quality of the included studies should be considered when interpreting the results.

The new emerging application of decompression combined with fusion comes with a concern of cost performance, however, it is a lack of big data support. We aimed to evaluate the necessity or not of the addition of fusion for decompression in patients with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis. ⋯ The overall efficacy of the decompression combined with fusion is not revealed to be superior to decompression alone. At the same time, more evidence-based performance is needed to supplement this opinion.

Incidence of Subsidence of 7 intervertebral Devices in Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion: A Network Meta-analysis.
Subsidence is an incapacitating complication in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). However, the debate over which of the intervertebral devices is associated with lower incidence of subsidence remains to be settled. ⋯ CP and IP resulted in a lower rate of subsidence than cage alone or ICAG. Zero-P and ROI-C cages led to similar subsidence rates with plate. All types of intervertebral device can be applied to both single-level and multilevel ACDF with comparable subsidence rate.
