Intermittent fasting enhances hippocampal NPY expression to promote neurogenesis after traumatic brain injury.
Interventions for preventing cognitive dysfunction after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are limited. Given that adult hippocampal neurogenesis after brain injury contributes to cognitive recovery, and hippocampal neurogenesis is potentially affected by nutritional factors, the aim of this study was to examine whether fasting could promote hippocampal neurogenesis and thus ameliorate the cognitive defects after TBI. ⋯ These findings suggest that IF promotes hippocampal neurogenesis after TBI by a mechanism that involves enhancement of NPY expression, to alleviate cognitive dysfunction caused by injury.

Randomized Controlled TrialSerum biomarkers of brain injury after uncomplicated cardiac surgery: Secondary analysis from a randomized trial.
Postoperative cognitive dysfunction is common after cardiac surgery. Postoperative measurements of brain injury biomarkers may identify brain damage and predict cognitive dysfunction. We describe the release patterns of five brain injury markers in serum and plasma after uncomplicated cardiac surgery. ⋯ Uncomplicated cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass is associated with an increase in serum/plasma levels of all the studied injury markers, without signs of blood-brain barrier injury. The biomarkers differ markedly in their levels of release and time course. Further investigations are required to study associations between perioperative release of biomarkers, postoperative cognitive function and clinical outcome.

Randomized Controlled TrialBrain Injury Effects on Neuronal Activation and Synaptic Transmission in the Basolateral Amygdala (BLA) of Adult Male and Female Wistar Rats.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as brain damage produced by an external mechanical force that leads to behavioral, cognitive, and psychiatric sequelae. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) is involved in emotional regulation, and its function and morphology are altered following TBI. Little is known about potential sex-specific effects of TBI on BLA neuronal function, but it is critical for the field to identify potential sex differences in TBI effects on brain and behavior. ⋯ Further, TBI increased spontaneous excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic current (sEPSC and sIPSC) amplitude in BLA neurons of females relative to all other groups. TBI increased sEPSC frequency in BLA neurons of females relative to males but did not alter sIPSC frequency. In summary, lateral fluid percussion produced different physiological responses in male and female rats, as well as sex-specific alterations in BLA neuronal activation, excitability, and synaptic transmission 1 h after injury.

Early complementary acupuncture improves the clinical prognosis of traumatic brain edema: A randomized controlled trial.
Traumatic brain edema occurs commonly brain injury, and most manifests as pericontusional edema of brain contusions. On the basis of evidence-based medicine, apart from recommending craniotomy and mannitol, there are few particularly effective measures to prevent and treat traumatic brain edema. It is uncertain whether an early complementary acupuncture treatment would improve long-term outcomes of patients with traumatic brain edema. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy and the safety of early complementary acupuncture for patients with traumatic brain edema. ⋯ This study will provide data regarding the efficacy of early complementary acupuncture for traumatic brain edema. If the study yields positive results, its findings may offer insights into a valuable complementary option of acupuncture for traumatic brain edema that could provide pilot evidence for large, randomized, controlled trials.Trial registration: This trial has been published in the Chinese Clinical Trial Register, http://www.chictr.org.cn/edit.aspx?pid=141208&htm=4 (Identifier: ChiCTR2100053794, registered on December 3, 2021).

Seizures and Cognitive Outcome After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Post Hoc Analysis.
Seizures and abnormal periodic or rhythmic patterns are observed on continuous electroencephalography monitoring (cEEG) in up to half of patients hospitalized with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). We aimed to determine the impact of seizures and abnormal periodic or rhythmic patterns on cognitive outcome 3 months following moderate to severe TBI. ⋯ The burden of seizures and abnormal periodic or rhythmic patterns was independently associated with worse cognition at 3 months following TBI. Their impact on longer-term cognitive endpoints and the potential benefits of seizure detection and treatment in this population warrant prospective study.
