Comparative StudyEffect of inhalation of organic dust-derived microbial agents on the pulmonary phagocytic oxidative metabolism of guinea pigs.
The effect of inhalation exposure of various biological agents associated with organic dusts on the function of guinea pigs pulmonary phagocytes was investigated. Agents included antigens of Erwinia herbicola, Thermoactinomyces vulgaris, and Aspergillus fumigatus; endotoxin of Erwinia herbicola; bacterial protease; and a fungal glucan preparation. ⋯ However, the relative magnitude of the inflammatory response varied greatly among these biological agents. In general, antigens of Erwinia herbicola and Aspergillus fumigatus were most potent, while bacterial protease was least effective.

Background: Denosumab is a fully human IgG2 monoclonal antibody that, neutralizing the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand (RANKL), inhibits the osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. It is yet to be defined if denosumab can reduce osteoporosis-related disability and improve health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) in patients with fragility fractures. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of denosumab in reducing back pain related disability and improving HRQoL in osteoporotic post-menopausal women with vertebral fractures. ⋯ Moreover, there was a significant improvement of both LS BMD (p < 0.001) and FN BMD (p < 0.001). No local or systemic adverse events, including new vertebral fractures, osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femur fractures, were reported. Conclusions: The data demonstrated that denosumab was effective in reducing back pain related disability and in improving HRQoL in post-menopausal women with vertebral fractures.

Effects of platelet-rich plasma on the quality of repair of mechanically induced core lesions in equine superficial digital flexor tendons: A placebo-controlled experimental study.
Tendon injuries are notorious for their slow and functionally inferior healing. Intratendinous application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been reported to stimulate the repair process of tendon injuries, but there is little conclusive evidence for its effectiveness. A placebo-controlled experimental trial was performed to test the hypothesis that a single intratendinous PRP treatment enhances the quality of tendon repair, as evidenced by improved biochemical, biomechanical, and histological tissue properties. ⋯ The repair tissue in the PRP group showed a higher strength at failure (p = 0.021) and Elastic Modulus (p = 0.019). Histologically, PRP-treated tendons featured better organization of the collagen network (p = 0.031) and signs of increased metabolic activity (p = 0.031). It was concluded that PRP increases metabolic activity and seems to advance maturation of repair tissue over nontreated experimentally induced tendon lesions, which suggests that PRP might be beneficial in the treatment of clinical tendon injuries.

Interaction between interferon gamma and insulin-like growth factor-1 in hippocampus impacts on the ability of rats to sustain long-term potentiation.
There is compelling evidence to suggest that inflammation significantly contributes to neurodegenerative changes. Consistent with this is the observation that several neurodegenerative disorders are accompanied by an increase in the concentration of interleukin (IL)-1beta. IL-1beta has a negative impact on synaptic plasticity and therefore an increased concentration of IL-1beta, such as that in the hippocampus of the aged rat, is associated with a deficit in long-term potentiation (LTP). ⋯ Intracerebroventricular injection of IFNgamma inhibited LTP, and increased microglial activation was observed in both IFNgamma-injected and aged rats. The age-related increase in IFNgamma was accompanied by a decrease in the hippocampal concentration of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1. The evidence presented suggests that IGF-1 acts to antagonize the IFNgamma-induced microglial activation, the accompanying increase in IL-1beta concentration and the consequent deficit in LTP.

Colorectal cancer liver metastases - a population-based study on incidence, management and survival.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-associated deaths with liver metastases developing in 25-30% of those affected. Previous data suggest a survival difference between right- and left-sided liver metastatic CRC, even though left-sided cancer has a higher incidence of liver metastases. The aim of the study was to describe the liver metastatic patterns and survival as a function of the characteristics of the primary tumour and different combinations of metastatic disease. ⋯ The worse survival in liver metastatic right-sided colon cancer could possibly be explained by the higher number of metastases, as well as more extensive segmental involvement compared with left-sided colon and rectal cancer, even though the latter had a higher incidence of liver metastases. Detailed population-based data on the metastatic pattern of CRC and survival could assist in more structured and individualized guidelines for follow-up of patients with CRC.
