Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyCharacteristics of the Chinese subjects entered the hypertension in the very elderly trial.
The baseline characteristics of patients in a multinational trial are possibly related to cardiovascular outcome. This study compared the baseline characteristics of patients recruited in China with those recruited in other countries. ⋯ Calorie restriction, compared with the rest of the world, may have resulted in lower stature and weight, and recent increases in calorie intake have not changed the metabolic profile of the very elderly hypertensive patients in China. Some of these biochemical differences may reflect different dietary lifestyle in the Chinese.

Serum amyloid A is independently associated with metabolic risk factors but not with early atherosclerosis: the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study.
Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a sensitive marker of inflammation and its elevation has been implicated in obesity and in cardiovascular disease, yet data on its regulation in young adults or on its role in early atherosclerosis is scarce. We investigated which factors explain the variation in SAA and analysed whether SAA could be associated with preclinical atherosclerosis. ⋯ Serum amyloid A was associated with several metabolic risk factors but was not an independent predictor of IMT or carotid artery compliance. Further longitudinal studies will show whether SAA holds a prognostic value as a risk marker, analogously to CRP.

Regional variation in gene expression in the healthy colon is dysregulated in ulcerative colitis.
To investigate differential intestinal gene expression in patients with ulcerative colitis and in controls. ⋯ Key findings are the expression gradient in the healthy adult colon and the involvement of novel gene families, as well as established candidate genes in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis.

Does the preoperative iron status predict transfusion requirement of orthopedic patients?
In patients scheduled for major orthopedic surgery, the presence of anemia before surgery can preclude the transfusion requirements. Iron deficiency anemia is believed to be a major cause of anemia, especially in the elderly. The importance of screening patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery in Norway for anemia and iron deficiency has not been investigated. The aim of the present study was to investigate if preoperative testing of iron status could predict transfusion requirement related to major elective orthopedic surgery. ⋯ There was no correlation between the iron status before surgery and the need for transfusion during and after surgery, although anemia before surgery was a predictor for the need for transfusion. Based in our limited study we could not recommend iron status screening before surgery. However further studies are needed to truly establish the incidence and the underlying etiology, in order to reduce the transfusion requirements.

Multicenter StudyPrevalence of mental illness and substance abuse disorders among incarcerated juvenile offenders in Mississippi.
The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among incarcerated juveniles in Mississippi was examined. A total of 482 adolescents completed a diagnostic questionnaire and a subset (N = 317) was assessed with face-to-face semi-structured interview. ⋯ Gender and placement site differences in rates of some psychiatric disorders were also noted. Routine mental health screening should be performed on all juveniles placed in secure detention facilities to identify those who need treatment services.
