Case ReportsA long adult intussusception secondary to transverse colon cancer.
The occurrence of adult intussusception arising from colorectal cancer is quite rare. We present the case of a 76-year-old man with sudden abdominal pain and vomiting. Clinical symptoms included severe abdominal distension and tenderness. ⋯ The patient underwent a left hemicolectomy with right transverse colostomy. Pathologic evaluation revealed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma invading the muscularis propria; the regional lymph nodes were negative for cancer cells. The postoperative course was uneventful.

ReviewBio-inspired nanomedicine strategies for artificial blood components.
Blood is a fluid connective tissue where living cells are suspended in noncellular liquid matrix. The cellular components of blood render gas exchange (RBCs), immune surveillance (WBCs) and hemostatic responses (platelets), and the noncellular components (salts, proteins, etc.) provide nutrition to various tissues in the body. Dysfunction and deficiencies in these blood components can lead to significant tissue morbidity and mortality. ⋯ Some of these approaches have further extended the application of blood cell-inspired synthetic and semi-synthetic constructs for targeted drug delivery and nanomedicine. The current study provides a comprehensive review of the various nanotechnology approaches to design synthetic blood cells, along with a critical discussion of successes and challenges of the current state-of-art in this field. Liquid biopsy of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and sequencing of cell-free DNA has rarely been used to identify epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, which can guide the design of precise, personalized treatment for patients with leptomeningeal metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma. ⋯ This is the first case report of clinical improvement after afatinib treatment in a patient with lung adenocarcinoma and leptomeningeal metastasis harboring an EGFR complex mutation (exon19del+K754E), and thus provides a clinical reference for treatment with afatinib of cancers harboring EGFR compound mutations.

Hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) is a rare and potentially fatal complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Most severe SOS result in multi-organ dysfunction and are associated with a high mortality rate (>80%). ⋯ In SOS patients with nonspecific clinical and biochemical findings, computerized tomography scans can be useful in differentiating SOS from other complications after HSCT. low molecular weight heparin is effective for the treatment of SOS.

ReviewTakotsubo or stress cardiomyopathy: role of nuclear cardiology using (123)I-MIBG.
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome or stress cardiomyopathy, is a very interesting syndrome of acute transient left ventricular dysfunction, usually following significant emotional stress. It was first described in Japan nearly two decades ago and many aspects of its pathogenesis still remain poorly understood. The incidence of out-of-hospital sudden death related to Takotsubo is currently unknown. ⋯ Takotsubo is most common in menopausal women although young individuals, including men, can also be affected. The autonomic nervous system has a defined role in the process. In this article, we will review the role of imaging the heart using (123)I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine, a radioactive marker allowing mapping of the autonomic nervous system of the heart, in cases of suspected Takotsubo.
