Transfusion of intra-operative autologous whole blood: influence on complement activation and interleukin formation.
Transfusion of autologous whole blood is one available method to reduce the need for allogenic blood transfusion. The objective of this study was to investigate the safety of transfusion of intra-operative autologous whole blood by monitoring plasma concentration of laboratory variables and adverse events after transfusion with the Sangvia(®) system. ⋯ Inflammatory mediators and plasma haemoglobin were increased in intra-operatively salvaged and filtered blood compared to circulatory levels. Intra-operative retransfusion of autologous whole blood caused a transient systemic increase that normalized in the early postoperative period. There were no significant adverse events reported in the study. These data suggest that the Sangvia(®) system can be used for intra-operative collection and retransfusion of salvaged blood.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyPrevalence of undiagnosed atrial fibrillation and of that not being treated with anticoagulant drugs: the AFABE study.
Atrial fibrillation constitutes a serious public health problem because it can lead to complications. Thus, the management of this arrhythmia must include not only its treatment, but antithrombotic therapy as well. The main goal is to determine the proportion of cases of undiagnosed atrial fibrillation and the proportion of patients not being treated with oral anticoagulants. ⋯ The prevalence of previously undiagnosed atrial fibrillation in individuals over 60 years of age is 20.1%, and 23.5% of those who have been diagnosed receive no treatment with oral anticoagulants.

Multicenter Study[The prognostic role of the programmed death-1 expression on T lymphocytes in septic patients].
Objective: To investigate the value of programmed death-1(PD-1) expression on the T lymphocytes for the prognosis of septic patients. Methods: From September 2017 to May 2019, septic patients were included in Department of Intensive Care Unit at 6 hospitals. The PD-1 expression on T cells were measured by flow cytometry. ⋯ The percentage of PD-1+/CD8+T cell was 3.91%, with AUC 0.771, sensitivity 64.29%, specificity 81.25%,(P=0.000 3). Conclusions: The T cell PD-1 expression is an independent risk factor to predict the 28-day mortality in septic patients. Combining the proportions of PD-1+/CD3+, PD-1+/CD4+and PD-1+/CD8+T cells may further enhance the predictive value for death.

Pegylated interferon alfa-2b alone or in combination with lamivudine for HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B: a randomised trial.
Treatment of HBeAg-positive patients with chronic hepatitis B is not effective in most. A combination of immunomodulatory pegylated interferon alfa-2b and antiviral lamivudine might improve the rate of sustained response. ⋯ Treatment with pegylated interferon alfa-2b is effective for HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B. Combination with lamivudine in the regimen used is not superior to monotherapy. HBV genotype is an important predictor of response to treatment.

HDL cholesterol, very low levels of LDL cholesterol, and cardiovascular events.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels are a strong inverse predictor of cardiovascular events. However, it is not clear whether this association is maintained at very low levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. ⋯ In this post hoc analysis, HDL cholesterol levels were predictive of major cardiovascular events in patients treated with statins. This relationship was also observed among patients with LDL cholesterol levels below 70 mg per deciliter. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00327691 [ClinicalTrials.gov].).
